Anyone have any experience with Falken HS-439 winter tyres?

Looking at purchasing a set of winter rubber for my newly acquired winter rims.

Can get a set of Falken HS-439 (225x40x18 fronts and 255x35x18 rears) delivered for circa £550.00.

Reviews on my-tyre seem to be good with a few people running them on BMW's. Just wondered if anyone on here has any experience of them on a Zed?

On a seperate note when do people usually fit winter tyres. I was thinking of swapping them this coming weekend. Afterall there is talk of snow and sub zero temperatures this month :?

Thanks

Hope they're OK as I just got some delivered and fitted to some spare 18" wheels for the e61. Mytyres deliver from Germany in about 3 days and were the cheapest I could find (price varies daily / weekly though).

We can compare results when it gets colder (and the releaseing agent has worn off)

The point where the performance improves is around 6°/7° degrees. A little warmer and the performance is comparable to summer / all season tyres. I found that when I got above 10°/12°the winters aren't great at speed, feel a little floaty. I just keep an eye on what the temp is like when I'm driving - it may be maxing at say 15° on some days, but if I'm driving mostly in the mornings and evenings, to and from work, it may be a lot colder than this when I drive. If the temps are getting low, and with what you've said, I think this weekend might not be a bad time to change.

As for the Falken's, no experience, but when it gets cold and especially when it get cold and wet or icy, then you'll no doubt see a vast improvement even with cheaper winter tyres, so I'm sure they will be fine.

All indicated ° are air temp.

Thanks for your responses guys. Much appreciated

Think I will get them changed this weekend if I get the new tyres back in time.

Guiseley, will be interesting to compare when we get some of the white stuff. Lets see who gets stuck first :driving:

Iv'e bitten the bullet and ordered some of these. Would have loved some of the Vredstien Wintracs but they were over my budget. As PS says even the cheap winter tyres have got to be some improvement over the summer ones and at least my summer wheels are going to be tucked up nice and warm in the garage with no chance of road salt or frost damaging those lovely shiny dished rims :D

Bring on the snow!!!! :driving:

Don't bet on it JDM ! There was an article in the Times last week about talk of snow in October and a terrible winter. It's all codswallop, there has been no Met Office forecast (they stopped doing them after the <rusting> barbecue summer debacle), and if anything there are as many things pointing to a mild and wet winter as there are a cold and snowy one ! In other words nobody has a clue.

Call me a cynic but I reckon these sort of forecasts are sponsored by companies with a vested interest in selling us stuff. That said, ordering a set of wheels and tyres is a wise move anyway because it WILL be less than 7C for a large part of the winter !!

Usual case with weather forecasts then eh!

Even so as you say they should be an improvement over summer tyres when the temp inevitably drops.

At least if we do get a big dump of the white stuff then I've got a slightly better chance of getting off my driveway this year!

You are not wrong, walking through Dumfries the other day thinking Bu@@er me it's cold got back in the car and it showed 7 deg, it has warmed up a bit again since then.

Yes, It certainly appears that the October weather can't make it's mind up.. Typical UK weather

Think I may still change them over this weekend though, as I am going to be pretty tied up the following weekends through to early November, including a trip to Whitby (over the North Yorkshire Moors) at the end of October. It can get pretty cold and severe up that neck of the woods!!

Well all this is subject to the tyres being delivered by the end of the week anyway as I beleive they are coming from Germany..

I've ordered a set of these too from Mytyres.
So we're now pretty much guaranteed the mildest winter since records began! :D

Just bringing up an old thread...

JDM, Guiseley, and others - how did you find these Falkens during last winter? I'm researching tyres for my e90 and these are a front-runner at the moment based on price and tyre reviews...

Anyone else feel free to wade in with recommendations for reasonably-priced winter tyres for an 18" staggered setup (225/40/18 and 255/35/18).

Ta.

They were fine once the release agent had worn off.
But then it was a very mild winter (as predicted by me) - so didnt need them.

Thanks geepee, sorry didn't pick up on the fact you'd run these tyres again too. We had it harder/colder up here last winter but it was still nothing compared to the winter before :o

I'm totally undecided. I ran Kumho KW27's on the Z4 last year and can't say a bad word against them. They're the cheapest option I've got for 18" staggered but there's these Falkens for a bit more and also Hankooks for a bit more again. As much as I love the reviews of the Dunlop Winter Sport 3D, I'm not paying ~£800 for a set of winter tyres!

Hmm, decisions to be made...

Absolutely no complaints when its cold, wet or snow....if it gets to 10C its like driving on a blancmange

Well on the basis of reviews online and comments on here I ordered a set of 18" staggered Falken HS-439s last night
