Anyone had this kind of wheel wobble - Found issue

Recently I've been having an issue with my Z4 where i slow down from 60mph to 40mph and i get a weird vibrating sensation mildly through the wheel but more heavy through the car itself, it happens only at these speeds and only on certain roads.

I've booked it in on Thursday for a full check over and a wheel alignment and an steering angle sensor re-calibration.

Possible causes could be so i read - Alignment (Doesn't pull left or right though), Wheel balancing, Flat spots on tires (Tires all have 5mm all round), Tire pressures (Checked and all good), drop links & lower arms have also been replaced. I have only done like 1500 miles since i bought it last October and the previous owner has told me it didn't do this with him and it did not do it when i collected her, its only done 68k miles.

Its quite worrying when it happens as its almost like that time i didn't do my wheels up tight enough when i was a kid and you just go this awful vibration.

Just wondered if anyone has experienced this and found the issue, either way i hope to find out more on Thursday.

Cheers Jamesy :!:

what tyres are you running? i had a weird issue when i was on Avons and they made a weird humming noise when you decellerate. other than that, id say wheel balancing.

Toyo Proxies on front and Firestones on the rear, my question is though how has the wheel become unbalanced since i bought it and done so little miles? I avoid as many pot holes as i can as i know this can be detrimental to the wheels and tires.

Funnily enough I've never taken the wheels off this car since I've had it, that is one mistake i would never make again, scary experience! Saying that i'd also never run the incorrect sized SPIGOT rings on a car either because when they fail the wheel bolts tend to undo themselves... :?

A wheel weight could have fallen off or your brakes are warped.
Does it only happen if you are braking lightly to scrub off speed or does it do it when you are heavy braking too.

No, even when I'm not applying the brakes it still does it. I do have drilled and grooved discs with street pads and they all look pretty new and the car sat for 2 years in a garage on trickle charge for most of that time.

Did you put the tyres on or were they on it when you bought it?
If it was sitting in a garage for 2 years with those tyres there could be flat spots on the tyres.

Bought the car with those tires on there, Yes possibly!

If the flat spots have been there from the previous owner I would have expected OP to notice before now.

My initial thought was the same as a few others: wheel balancing (or more likely, a lost wheel weight). If it was a front wheel I would expect you to feel it far more through the steering wheel than the car itself, therefore I think a back wheel might be to blame.

However, you would notice a wheel balancing (or lost wheel weight) issue at various speeds and it wouldn't be present only when braking from 60 mph to 40 mph. This is indicative of a brake disc/caliper/pad issue, again potentially at the rear due to the vibration mode.

can the vibration be attributed to one corner, or is it the entire car? if its the entire car i wonder if maybe its gearbox mount or driveshaft related?

also back to my earlier point when my avons went they basically developed an edge like a 10 pence piece - lots of little bumps. though that was more of a humming noise rather than vibration, and that was specific to one corner.

Yes even when I'm not braking and coming to a stop from the said MPH its doing it...i have drilled and grooved brakes all round and there in pretty good nick I'd say, i don't really use my brakes.

Possibly, Its more prominent on the front end under your feet and slight vibration through the wheel. Definitely worth checking the tires though as many say flat spots could be the issue...

We have a slight vibration in our car at about 80 and after investigation we were told that one of the rears has a slight flat spot.
The tyre with the flat spot previously had a puncture repaired in it.

I had the same thing about a month ago
I thought I lost a weight so swapped the spare on both fronts no difference
Turned out to be a seized brake calliper nearly melted my finger print off when I touched the disk

Many years ago I had exactly the symptoms you describe with a TR7, which turned out to be propshaft related. Some part of it wasn’t tightened correctly and dropping down speed it developed quite a severe harmonic vibration, but at other speeds and on the way up it was OK.
