Hi all,

I am looking at a zed next week and it has the midrange system so was looking to find out more about it. Im quite new here and have had a browse around but am getting confussed by a few things.

1. Does the Midrange speaker system an AMP in the boot. (have read various posts and some say only the carver has an amp) and subs are run off the headunit etc.

2. What does it sound like? I know the Carver is the best system but how does it compare to this? Is it ok or am i going to want to upgrade it ASAP?

3. Has anyone upgraded the midrange system slighty and made it sound better? If so what did you do?

Thanks

Ash

Hi. Mine has the midrange - I think it's called the BMW Professional Hifi. It's OK for normal use, so long as you don't crank it up as it will distort. I listen to a lot of deep house and reggae and the bass is ok for me. Anyway, I don't like drowning too much of the engine noise out!

There's no amp in the boot.

I think you will find from a number of the comments show that the mid range system is the best if you plan to tweak it in any way, be it add your own amp and sub setup or just add an Aux port.

I have the professional HiFi with Nav and have upgraded all my speakers and added an Aux but still running the same head unit and the sound is vastly better. I can turn up the volume a long way (far past anything you would want for a sustained period) with no distortion, also the speakers I fitted in the foot wells have given me much cleaner and clearer bass.

Sounds interesting....any more info on what you did exactly?

I would also be interested in what you upgraded, have you installed an amp then?

The Z4 has either 6 speakers or 10 speakers. Easiest way to tell is if there subs behind the seats or cubby holes. With the 6 speaker system there are no subs, mid range in the door or amps.

The problem with the 10 speaker system and upgrading it is the stock headunit sends a digital signal to the amp that cant be replicated by aftermarket headunits.

I wouldn't bother upgrading the rears, i'd instead go for a decent set of 2 or even better 3 way components up front. You can then either run these of an amp or the stock headunit. If you want more then add a subwoofer and swap out the headunit as this can be a limiting factor.

I forget the option names (ish) but I think it goes

1. 6 speaker - BMW loudspeaker system, no amp in boot
2. 10 speaker - BMW Hifi Loudspeaker system, amp in boot
3. 10 speaker - BMW Hifi Professional DSP, digital amp in boot

2. and 3. are a nightmare for aftermarket head units, 1. is easier.

I have

10 speaker - BMW Hifi Loudspeaker system, amp in boot

Ad cannot complain about sound quality at all.

And i'm serious about sound quality..

In fact mine sounds better than my mates HK system in his M3.

Then again the fact its a coupe might help with acoustics

I'm still confused, is there an amp on the boot with the midrange system or not then as people are saying different things. Haha

The car in question is an 04 plate did they change to system in the facelift?

Thanks

Got 10 speakers? If so you'll have an amp in the boot

As per post above, only basic system has 6 speakers without the amp in the boot

This post says he has no amp in the boot hence my confusion :D , ill just wait until i see the car next week and have a look and listen for myself.

Thanks for all of the help guys.

IF anyone has any recommendations for which speakers to replace/what speakers to replace them with that would be great.

Thanks

Ash

Here's the link to the part numbers.... http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BT52&mospid=47797&btnr=65_1209&hg=65&fg=25

Different part number for hifi amp and "top" hifi amp

Hi, I looked at upgrading the speakers for my Z4 (2004) and went for a set of Hertz 3 way component speakers using a Hertz amp. What a difference 10 times better than the stock stuff.

Nope, no amp needed, couple of links worth reading are:

The car i saw today defiantly had an amp, it was in the same area as the battery and not next to it like the carver set up.

It sounded pretty decent to be fair i haven't heard the carver set up but i was impressed i must say.
