The general issue with solid wind breakers is that they suffer badly from resonance and turbulence at certain road speeds, hence why almost all the 'proper' ones are a mesh design..

I paid £115 for my BMW original one - admittedly the rest of the bits were on the car including the centre mesh pieces in the rollover hoop.

I've always wondered about this. Does any manufacturer fit a solid breaker in any convertible?

I reckon the standard mesh grill looks better than the glass one anyway and I've had no visibility issues.

the BMW 6 series convertible has a retractable rear window that can be left up as a wind block.
 
I installed one today, so far I don't like it very much.
Looks great but there is a lot more wind inside the cabin now, and when you drive through tunnels de sound gets reflected on the window.

I will try it out a few more days but I think I will swap back to the original deflector.
 
Glass is a bit of a nightmare - you need the airflow, otherwise you can get an increase in noise, "chopping", or actually a disturbance of airflow which makes buffeting in the cabin worse.

Look nice though.

Agreed.

From a fluid mechanics point of view, any solid wind breaker placed normal to the flow direction is a bad idea from the point of view of turbulence, noise and drag. Needs a few holes drilling into it :)

Looks cool though.

What would happen to a glass wind breaker in the event of a sizeable rear end shunt? I know what I'd prefer from a safety perspective.

Probably the same as with your rear window.
They come with a dahler G29 tuned cars and the wiesmann Boldmen CR4
So I think, they had to have passed some kind of safety testing.

Its mostly the wind inside the cabin and a bit more road noise that bothers me :)

The MK1 Boxster had a solid Perspex/acrylic on which was removable. It certainly helped reduce turbulence.
