Anyone got any ideas?

I'm a non resident UK citizen looking to buy a Z4 for when I'm back in the UK. Trouble is I can't get insurance as a non-resident other than through a company in Wales who want £850. As a UK resident I'd get it for £350 with my 6 years NCB which is still current. Anyone got any ideas? I've already trawled round the search engines trying to find people in similar circumstances without much luck and the big companies don't want to know. I've sent off a message to Chris Knott but I'm not hopeful. It's a long shot but has anyone got any ideas? Would much rather be having fun round the UK in a Z4 than a Vauxhall Corsa hire car for 10 weeks this summer.

Apologies if this is in the wrong part of the forum.

Can't you just use the address where you will be staying as your address on the quote? And say you are resident?

I could do and it's tempting but if I were caught out and lets face it they do their best to keep payouts to a minimum so checking my residency wouldn't be too difficult for them, then I'd be well and truly shafted, not to mention how much out of pocket I'd be. Just not worth it.

Can you not get your normal insurance in your country of residence 'extended' to cover another car for 10 weeks.

I think your problem will be that most insurance companies expect the car and driver to be registered/resident in the same country - so your scenario tends to break the norm whichever solution is proposed.

Your best option is to go through a specialist broker to create a tailored policy for you, but it might not be cheap, as you've found out.

Is the Welsh quote for a whole year or just for the 10 weeks?

Also, are you hoping to buy, run, and sell a Z4 all in 10 weeks?

I have had that suggestion re extension of my car insurance here in Oman before. I will give it a go thanks.

Yes the tailored policy is ridiculous at £850 although that is for the year. It's also taking into account my 6 years of NCB apparently. Who knows what it would be without it! I'm only in the UK for 10 weeks this summer so I can't justify £85 a week just for insurance.

No I want to keep the car. I've always wanted a little sports car for the summer and the Z4 fits the bill perfectly.

I've now started looking at the other scenario that has been suggested ie getting a relative to own the car and have me as a named driver. I'd been told that this was a non starter too because I'm a non resident but since then I've heard it's ok as the registered owner and main driver of the car is the only one who has to be a resident - what a ball ache!

I'd rather have the car in my name and as the main driver but if this is the only way so be it.

Thanks for the replies.

How about asking someone you know in UK to insure it in their name with you as a named driver?

Wouldnt that be what is known as Fronting? ie they are just as likely not to pay out?

£850 for a year doesnt seem too bad, I pay £750ish with 14 years NCD

Don't forget that you could cancel the £850 policy after you've finished with it and ask for a pro-rated refund - which would probably be something like £500.

Bloody hell, where do you live?

So does anyone know of a company who will put a non-resident on a car as a named driver? Tried quite a few and keep getting knocked back.
