the oem sat nav looks good, but i know some portable ones maybe better i.e. tomtom etc.

anyone fitted an aftermarket one, to replace the standard stereo, any pics?

what info does the sat nav screen give aswell, i assume onboard computer i.e. average mpg, current mpg, etc.

For the cost of replacing the headunit with a pop out screen sat Nav, you can retrofit OEM, I have bought all the parts for less than £500.

OEM give additional computer functions, would tell you what they are, but havent fitted yext (Next week before you ask PVR).

keep in mind you have to take a stanley knife to the dash to retrofit OEM! Good result but takes some balls to do :D

Is there a push out behind the covering or do you have to cut and drill to make the hole :?

Personally not a fan of factory fit Sat Nav units, we've got it fitted in the ML and it is appalling but you need it come resale time.

From what I have seen the BM factory fit one isn't much better!

A mate of mine has a kenwood one fitted with a pop up screen in the same location as the OEM one. Looks quite neat and tidy but still looks a little after market.

No, there is nothing to guide you on where to cut. You can not make a mistake as the bracket from the screen needs to fall exactly over the mounting points in the dash.

Stanley is sooo last year ... :D Swiss army knife all the way for my two nav fit projects

After looking extensively at retrofitting the bmw satnav (and I even bought some of the parts), I backed off and fitted an aftermarket unit. I chose a Pioneer AVIC N4. The full satnav would have cost me $1100 to retrofit, with doing all the work myself, and the Pioneer option, with bluetooth and Sirius radio accessories, cost me $950. Not a big savings in cost, but I actually decided I would prefer to have aftermarket. The BMW satnav for the Z4 is simply too dated and antiquated. By going with a DIN HU with flipout nav monitor, I am adding both newer and better screens and maps, and a better stereo component to the car (I'm a stereo nut and also run a big amp and fancy german 3-way speakers). I am also ensuring that if better-and-newer satnavs come out in the future, I can easily upgrade by removing and selling the old one, and sliding in the new one with minimal effort and re-wiring.

You got any pics of your setup?

yeah pics please

what does oem screen do aswell as sat nav function?
I have the OEM and love it simply for the total integration rather than quality of maps, etc.

In terms of 'what else does the screen do' depends on what other modules you have

It shows the radio stations, CD's, station tuning, etc.
Is the TV screen if you have TV fitted
Has the bluetooth phone address books, calls, diallling, etc. if fitted
Displays the on board computer and various settings

Think that's it but I may have missed some
