Anyone got a tune on their car?

Hi folks,

Anyone got a Procede or BMS PnP tune installed in their car? I did a search but no results.... Hard to believe nobody has installed one.....

I think the fact that no body has bothered with either of these options (unless some says otherwise) may - and only may - be and indication that there no that good for the Zed

After years of waisting time and money on aftermarket tuning bits for cars and bikes, I've learnt my lesson that OEM knows best for the road!

Anyway, Procede is a little late for me!! :P

Well, my JB4 c/w DCI is on order, and I'll let you know how it goes. I had my Leon Cupra remapped and also my previous 335D, and the remaps transformed both of those, so I am hopeful of similar results this time. I'm also getting a custom cat back system built by AAS in Newcastle next month, as I think the OEM sound is too tame for this car. Again, I'll keep you posted after install.

OK, so the JB4 and DCI are now fitted and my initial reaction - holy FCUK! The performance improvement is simply staggering. The kick in the back you now get when you floor the throttle pedal is simply phenomenal. It is early days, but this is by far the biggest improvement I have seen when compared to my previous experience of remaps etc. I also like the fact that the JB4 is a piggy-back install, and can therefore be easily removed when you put the car into the dealer for any work etc. Now looking forward to getting the custom cat back exhaust installed next month. I would estimate an 80-100bhp increase at the wheels with my mods so far, and maybe a little more from the exhaust when completed. Very good value for money IMHO. There are 7 switchable maps on the JB4 - 3 of which are applicable to stock cars, so I still have some playing around to do, however I don't want to risk any engine problems long term, so am going to be conservative until I get some more experience of the options. I have not heard of any engine issues with this mod, and as the same engine is already being tweaked by BMW for the 1M and 35iS, then I'm pretty confident that the engine can take the extra power safely. I don't agree with the comment someone made that 'OEM knows best for the road' as my experience has been that OEM tunes the standard car quite conservatively for a wide range of operating conditions and makes allowances for poor quality fuel and other factors that may affect performance. I have always run my cars with the very best fully synthetic oils and used good quality 98 octane fuel etc. along with strict adherence with service intervals etc. and have not had any problems.

Sounds impressive! Turbo cars always react better to a remap. 8)

How's the MPG difference?

Just be carefull if you have a prang with your insurance company! Hot topic these days! The MOT test is closing in on it aso!

I cant see a mention of the model/engine you've tuned - I'm guessing it's the new Z4?

I looked at tuning options for my 3.0si and only looking at around 12bhp gain for £300+ :-(

You do realise BMW can & do interrogate your ECU to see if you've chipped/remapped it, and can void warranty payouts where they believe they remap/chip has been a cause in the failure (transmission, diff, engine, ecu, etc.) - so be careful about where you take it for maintenance/warranty work.

Most of the reason for them doing this as a matter of course on turbo cars is due to the amount of claims they've had from 330/335/530/535 petrol & diesel turbo owners who've remapped them and removed the torque safety limits.

OK, some quick responses - my car is a 35i. As you say, It's not really worth looking at non Turbo car as gains are low.

Fuel consumption seems to be unaffected initially, but I haven't done many miles since installing it. My previous experience of remaps suggests that consumption will be increased slightly depending on how you drive - probably by about 10%. My rolling average display however has stayed resolutely at 29.4 mpg - but I don't drive like a maniac anyway, I just like having the overtaking grunt when I want it.

Regarding the interrogation of the ECU by BMW, the JB4 has options to manually or automatically clear the hidden ECU codes that detect any tuning modules. In bypass mode, with codes cleared, the unit is invisible to ECU interrogation, but as I said it is a simple enough job to remove it entirely, so my intention is to do this when visiting the dealer for servicing anyway just to be sure. The software supplied with the JB4 allows you to interrogate the ECU via the USB connection, and read any fault codes that are raised. I have not seen any as yet.

Not sure what you mean by MOT test closing in, as the car will be in stock mode when it goes in for a test, so emissions will be entirely as per OEM specs. Am I missing something?

Regarding torque safety limits, there are a number of people running much higher levels of boost than the standard map I am using with meth and nox injection etc. and they seem to be running OK, so I am not too worried. I think there is a good margin of safety built in by BMW, and my car is still operating within the limits of the engine and gearbox.

Anyway, I will update when I get the exhaust installed, and hopefully get some sounds recorded before and after if I can get organised in time.
