Anyone for bass?

I know this will not be to everyones taste but I am in the minority of people on this forum who like to have that bit of extra bass to their sound system.

I haven't had a sub woofer in my car since I was 19. (Some 10 years ago). But since i've purchased the Z4 as my weekend hobby car, I think it only right to spend a bit of time and money upgrading the sound system to improve it.

So ordered these on Sunday which turned up today :)
A double 8" sub enclosure (which I may add ports too)

and 2 x JBL 8" GTO 804 subs which i've read good reviews on.

I'm not out to have the loudest car by any means, i just want to add some extra depth and clarity to my music as I have the basic 6 speaker system.

Once i've fitted the subs, I will probably buy some 10cm speakers for the front doors and hope that is enough of an upgrade.
If not I will then go down the route of 3 way components in the front, if im still not happy (which I doubt) I will look into something behind the seats.

Hope this inspires some more of you dare I say it "oldies" to add subs ;)

Just been out to do a test fitting. I intentionally got a smallish box so it didn't use up the entire boot space, hence why I may have to port the box due to lack of volume inside.

But here's how much space it takes up (and the parcel shelf is lowered not raised)

Looks good- very compact....

Have you checked whether you've got room for the amp by the battery? It could slot in nicely leaving the rest of the boot space free?

It's a shame on the 10 speaker setup, or a nice compact sub would be tempting for me.

Looking forward to the sound report, I always wondered how good it would sound, seeing as the airflow to the cockpit is a little restricted.

I like the way you think. Most people believe they need a great big woofer and I'm often laughed at when suggesting to go for an 8" woofer (especially the 804e!) but give them the right power and they'll sound brilliant!

What amplifier are you going for?

Don't disable your stability control ..
Tail happy is just your Zed groovin' to your tunes as you meander down the roadway ...

Just sayin'

Well am planning on using an old Pioneer GM-X962 2 channel amplifier that I have. It is on the large side though so need to see if and where it can fit first before I decide whether to use it or buy a new one.

Nice project, Dan. I bottled it and went for a slimline sub behind the passenger seat. Really pleased with the extra bass and depth it gives me tho - and I still have full use of the monster boot! Lol. :D

Cheers. You may have made a wise move. Just measured my amp up and it's pretty big. Too big to mount to the back of the sub box and too tall to mount at the front so I couldn't keep a flush floor.

So I either need to mount it to the firewall somehow or buy a new amp. Could start getting expensive. Need to power 2 x 200 watt subs at 4 ohms.

I wish I had a photo to show you my former 306 cabriolet trunk. White alcantera, 12"sub with 5channel amp and Dynamatted to channel the sound through the rear seats. You'd open up the trunk lid and it lit up in red neon with the amp and woofer behind a glass screen. Not allowed to do anything like that on the Zed as Im wrong side of 40. Even though I still listen to Mauro Picotto.

As for amps, alpine mrx-m55 or jl audio jx500/1d.

Rated at 550rms and 500rms respectively at 2 ohm, so each woofer is seeing 50-75rms more than they're rated for which is what you want once you factor in all the inefficiencies of installing an amplifier in your car (voltage drop and box rise to name a few).

Not to mention that JBL have some of the most underrated woofers on the market! (Was feeding a gto-1014 rated at 300rms, on a good clean 500rms and it performed like an absolute champ!)

How do you connect the amplifier to the standard speaker system? I am thinking about the same setup.

I'm running an Alpine X305s aftermarket head unit, so will take outputs from that to the amp via RCA cables.
