Hi guys alot of us are approaching the 4 year mark with our babies and they need the gearbox and diff fluid changing according to service schedules, im going to be doing my own transmission and Diff fluid change this year to save some money, ....... can anyone recommend some Trans fluid and diff fluids and the quantities needed?

Expensive year for my ///M this year... it needs its shim service, coolant change, gearbox fluid change, diff fluid change, brake fluid change, supercharger oil change........... GUTTED!! lol. ohhh and of course an MOT!!

Be wary guys as you approach the 4 year mark BMW state a whole host of fluid changes....... Not great when my service is due in summer and so is my new baby........

Am I right in thinking the gearbox and diff fluid is changed at Insp.2? Mine is coming up for insp.2 in just over 3k.

I'm pretty sure this is part of insp 2 I wouldn't bother doing it separately? Mine is due in 8k or so and will be approximately 4 years 6 months young at current usage...coolant change already done.

BMW state gearbox oil is for life of the vehicle but that doesn't stop anyone changing it.

If it helps done mine , not to hard of a job the hardest thing is getting your car high enough (and level) so you can get underneath . Brought my oil from http://www.opieoils.co.uk/
i used a small hand pump for the diff and a pipe through the engine bay to the gearbox, total cost approx £50 .......wear gloves its toxic !

You have a diff? In your non-M Z?

Just to add, on my service book under Ins2 I see the following:

Take it the rear axle thingy means the diff? Least this confirms both the trans and diff oils are replaced.

arhh brilliant... i didnt know its part of the insp2..... coolio im happy with that then ill let simpson deal with it ;-)

ohhh im on insp 1. Im assuming thats the SHIM service...... i still need the coolant to be changed Tho :-(

Shims are done on insp2 as well. In fact, everything on insp1 is done on insp2 plus the things on that page I showed above :)

Coolant isn't part of normal servicing for some reason

Of course... every car has a differential. What you are thinking is a Limited Slip Differential, which only M's have.

D'oh. Slaps head. :headbang:

Wish I was approaching 4yrs old.

The plus side is I benefit from their 4 year maintenance scheme making things a lil cheaper. Another Oil Service due this week

Yep one thing I have noticed is that the M is very good at giving the wallet a good spanking, even with everything running fine...worth it for the good times but there are days when I wish it was a toyota aygo ;)
