Anyone considered retro fitting SMG II

My friends E46 comes with this SMG melarky. It is very good and a BIG improvement over the SMG I they put in some of the early Z4's. Just wondered if anyone has tried doing it to the M? What would be involved? Just the gearbox and ECU? Paddles might be a PIA to fit so may have to just have the gear lever?

You've set the record for the amount of new topics in a month!!

LOL

I'm always the same, just ask the GF. Once I get an idea in my head, ie buying a car, I'll spend days trawling the internet, researching it. Then when I get it its the same thing until I get it just how I want it. Then I calm down and just enjoy it :driving:

Would not consider an auto box, it is a sports car and the fun for me is changing gear. I have the x5 for the auto box.

On a more constructive note, i loved SMGII when i was on it, but it's dimwitted around town and jerky as hell.

DSG/DCT are a big leap forward.

You just would never fit SMG II to any car... when it goes wrong it is a pain and can be expensive :(

I had it on my M3 and I loved it but it did cost me £800 whilst BMW goodwill covered the other £1500 as they fitted a new pump... You have to get to learn how to use SMG II and you need to do the downshifts yourself if you want proper control over it: when you do that it's a great bit of kit but the potential for troubles means I don't think anyone would retro fit it. I'd take a guess SMGII E46 M3s are lower in value now they are getting on a bit compared to normal manual M3s, purely down to if it goes wrong...

Something like this one? Although this one is SMG3

With enough time and money anything is possible. Are you very wealthy? If you are then go for it! If not i think you should stick to the stock transmission.

Stick with the stock transmission in my view.. It was built that way for a reason.

That's very cool, 7 speed? if only he'd done that to an /M. Now all he needs is CJ10Jeeper's paddles mod. 8)
