Anyone change their 5 series for a Z4?

Hello,

I'm wondering if any member previously owned a 5 series and changed from that to a Z4? I'm currently in a 530D M Sport Auto E60 and am considering a change (always had 5 series).

I'm leaning towards a 3.0Si Sport auto, and viewed a few, but it's going to be a big change. I realise that there is a world of difference between the two, but I'm interested if anyone has made the switch and what they think?

I made the switch from a 2004 E60 525D SE recently, I don't regret the change (mostly) as i always felt the 5 felt too heavy and slowish off the mark. The Z4 is night and day, small light and nimble. The suspsension on the Z4 is very stiff, you feel every imperfection on the road when driving and the steering takes some getting used to. I sometimes hit it in to sport mode just to stiffen the steering up when travelling at speed, it can be very lively at times and it requires 100% atttention at all times.

and yes it is a huge change,considering i went from a luxury spaceship to a brutal spartan monster.

but once you have become from the shock and open the roof drive in the countryside or on the motorway,cornering like on rails getting attention from others and having fun with your machine it will be allright.

i have been questioning myself for a while if it was a good change to make ,and for me the answer was YESS
but ask yourself what you want from your ride!
if you want smooth sailing and bootspace or the same comfort as a 5 series then stick to that.

maybe hire a z for a few days then you an try one.

its much more a hands on car and sometimes when your tired and just want to go home the ride can be a bit harsch and at those times i miss my 528i exe .
perhaps choose a 330ci instead??

My car i traded in was only on the guys site for 2 day before it was sold, I was well shafted when i see what he advertised it for.
 
I had 523i Sport E60 (Manual) before I bought E85 in February last year. The only thing I miss about E60 is iDrive. But the driving experience of E85 is completely different from E60, i.e. even better grip than E60 and low driving position (just overtook 2 cars round a medium bend from outside at 60mph today :D ). I expect my E89 arriving next month will be even better.

I think I am ready for a change, and something a little different to my 5. I don't really need a big car any more, but it does give a sense of security and a very solid feel, and is certainly quick enough when I need it to be, with upwards of 33+ mpg for the work commute and I've seen 46+mpg at legal speeds with 4 on board and a bootfull of luggage.

I suppose the choice would eventually be down to coupe or roadster. I prefer the look of the roadster, but friends seem to like the coupe better. Ultimately its me that will be driving it so I'll make the decision and be happy with it, so I suppose the next question is does anyone have any view on a reasonable period of owning a coupe and then a roadster back to back (or vice versa)?

Me too - have had 2 e39's (A 528 se and a 525 Msport) and still have an e60 (525 Msport) - it's a great family car, but nothing like the Zed.
First impressions (other than it being tiny) are how hard the ride is, and how quickly it goes when you use the 'sport' :wub: button. I miss the iDrive a little too - the Zed feels quite old inside compared to the e60.
Also I don't remember being quite so interested in a 5 series forum - reason enough to buy one!
The coupe's my favourite in terms of looks, but then as Tweed says "You'll never get a suntan in a coupe".

I sold my E60 530iSE auto fully loaded back in November and got delivery of 3.0sdrive just before xmas
Mid life crisis, the 530 felt great, but there was no spark!

Now the E89 is an entire new life! 5 months down the line and I still dream about my next drive, I still wake up in the morning and look at the shape and style sitting on the drive and I still think everyone is looking as I drive past :oops:

On the other hand, twice in five months I have wished that I had back seats instead of having to drive the wife's mini clubman with friends in the back and once I embarrassed myself in a store when I had to give back something I bought when I found it diddn't fit in the boot (in saying that the boot is still surprisingly spacious).

Overall you are going to LOVE IT! Whatever you might miss on the E60 will be made up by the sensations running through as you drive the Z
