Hi

has anyone parted with thier hard earned beer tokens for the new TomTom app for the iphone? If so is it worth buying?

Cheers

i cant bring myself to do it as i bought a new tom tom earlier this year which included uk/euro maps for 2 years free. plus if i had a tom tom stolen / snatched from the car not a big deal, but losing an iphone is a lot of cash for me.

if the app is £60 how much will the mount be? id guess £90 ish, for that money you can buy a good dedicated tom tom which you can loan to family/friends and has a resale value at end of life, where as the app you cant sell on, the mount you could of course!

Yeah you both make good points. I also think that it is expensive and can't be as good as a dedicated system.

Hey klarky noticed your in shropshire also

Do you go to the midlands breakfast club or any other local meets?

went to the breakfast club when a load of us from the forum attended a couple of months back, may pop down myself for future ones as its pretty close to me.

I have a couple of sat nav apps on my iphone and find it very useful to have as a backup. I hook up the iphone to the Dension anyway, so it is on charge and hooked to the cars audio by a single cable. Much neater than the TomTom unit, which needed the cigar lighter for power.

I have the TomTom too, but it is left in the glove box now. The TomTom software on the iPhone is supposed to be very over-rated... considering iPhones in the UK have an unlimited data plan, it includes none of the interactive features that you would maybe have expected. My personal fave so far is the Sygic release.

My only complaint about these things is if you get a call or a text it interrupts the GPS... pain in the arse if you are navingating a tricvky part of your journey LOL

I'll probably get it, and the mount for general iPhone in car use, and sell my TomTom One XL...

I rarely use sat nav, but when I do it's handy to have... but having £190 tool that is now worth maybe £50 that sits in my boot just seems stupid really. When I do get it out it's often out of date with data... great if you use it all the time, but for me the iPhone app makes more sense, will be updated and bug-fixed more readily etc...

The mount itself sounds great, with built-in mic/speaker, so hands-free kinda built in, and an aux-output point via the main lower plug socket, so can go straight into my aux-in to the radio that way too. Charger built it etc...

Seems a great all-round package if I can fit it in neatly down near the ash tray.

OK, dice/pro nav/bluetooth would be better, but I don't have all those ;) :D (too much weight ;) )

Ive got the tomtom app on my iphone, havent tried it out yet but plan to do so this week. Will let you know how i get on.

Hi,

I use the tomtom on iphone and have found it to be quite good.

I also use tomtom standalone unit and this has its uses on long runs/use in vans etc but for quick navigation the tomtom iphone app is very good.

Slight lag on instructions and not that loud but it works for me. (cradle from tomtom which is out later this year is meant to address these points as it has a better gps chip inside and a speaker.)

I eject a cd then place the iphone on that, i have a grippy case so it doesnt move!

Bit of a battery muncher though!

My friend had procured the tom tom app (I have too but have yet to install it). He says it's fine for most driving, but when in a big city like San Diego it was having major problems. Plus it didn't say street names when turning so that made things fun.
From what I saw of it's operation while visiting with him, it's a great backup but not a real substitute for an actual GPS.
