Anyone Bought A Manual and Wish They'd Gone Auto?

Would never consider an auto. Drove autos in the States and they are soooooooo boring. If nothing else, a manual gives my left hand side something to do whilst driving. I am stuck in traffic on every commute for a considerable amount of time, but the changing from 1st to 2nd and back again doesn't really bother me. Also, the only person I know who has an auto, is a very good friend of mine who just couldn't pass her test in a manual. So I always think of autos being driven by people who can't cope with changing gear and driving at the same time. That and Americans.
I have both a manual and an auto... I like then both.... it totally depends on the type of car and what it's being used for...
for all those moaning about 1st and 2nd gear changes in traffic.... just use 2nd... the Zed is good enough to handle it, and makes for a smoother ride...and less changing required....

^^ good point made above, I quite often pull off in 2nd gear.

that's how I feel about autos & I still class them as something you buy if you are over 70 & don't really care too much about driving... If you are interested in driving buy a manual if not get a auto. bandit12 said:
I found that too. The sports button felt flat on the manual 3.0 Z4's I test drove but the auto just seemed to spring into life with the sports button on. Obvioulsy just an illusion casued by not being in timed control of the gear change but it was a real rush when it launches off with the press of a button.

On autos the sport button speeds up changes, raises the change up point and generally holds a lower gear in any situation giving it much quicker responses. This is on top of the other features of increasing throttle sensitivity and reducing steering assistance (latter 2 on manuals too)
I'm not being funny but I've noticed most of the auto haters drive older cars and have probably never driven a modern day auto. Try one, then tell me autos have no driver interaction using the paddles!

They can't be that bad otherwise all the supercars wouldn't have it!?

About as pointless having a manual in the UK as it is having a convertible.
I'm in the process of replacing all 3 cars in the households as auto's - the only way to drive in Stop Start England & especially London.

Approach a corner, brake hard, depress clutch, swing right foot over to the accelerator, blip precisely to rev match, down change, release clutch before revs drop all whilst braking consistently throughout.

Your right no more involvement or interaction in a manual...
I think we all agree that auto boxes will make for quicker lap times, that's not the point.
And the E89 is more of a GT than a sports car....in my tiny mind of course.

Autos/twin clutches are quicker than manuals & the mrs has a twin clutch in hers with paddles & it blips the throttle on down changes but is it exciting...hardly, I am happy to enjoy a stick & three pedals in my M3 & enjoy being part of the driving experience rather than holding onto the wheel flicking paddles.
If I want to flick paddles I can put my playstation on, I accept I am old fashioned & live in the dark ages but a manual gearbox is rewarding in my eyes & you are rewarded for the effort you put in if you get your changes right & I find that satisfying, I don't get much pleasure from flicking a paddle though.
It will always be personal preference imo & both have their place in certain situations/applications.
The only thing I like automatic on my car, are lights and windscreen wipers

nothing better than setting a car/bike right for a nice sweeping corner.... but sometimes nothing better than sticking the big sledgehammer into Drive and letting it do the work...
as I said, just depends on the vehicle, and what it's being used for...
I couldn't imagine my bike being an auto for example....
