Anyone been to Vegas?

We stayed at the Flamingo last year, the only casino with the original 50's (i think) frontage. You can get rooms with views of the Bellagio fountains from here too. Not too bad a hotel, pretty good location on the strip.

Also the Flamingo is a pretty good casino in my opinion. We judged casinos on how long you were sitting there playing 1line 1C machines before you got served drinks... Flamingo always came out on top!

Make sure you visit Freemont street too, its the old end with classic casinos like Golden Nugget etc. Minimum bets are usually a bit lower...

There was a loyalty car scheme when we went out called Total Rewards or something... You get a coupon book loads of things including things like discount buffets (2for1 etc) so makes eating cheaper. And the buffets are GOOD!

Just go there with a budget that you are happy losing. That was my mindset and seemed to work okay...

Oh, when we were there last October there was a free slot tourney at the imperial palace. Basically bash a button as much as you can for 5 minutes or something, and the highest points win $500 reel rewards. My wife won the first prize! Downside if you cannot cash out the reel rewards, but you can keep everything you win so were were cashing out every win over $1!

I loved it... Hopefully you will love it too! Its an adult playground which is a world away from day to day reality!

The one annoying thing... Mexican's on the streets with call girl cards, constantly click them at you...

They've clamped down on this recently. I was there a couple of months back and saw far fewer than usual.

I have a friend that lives there and it looks like I may be going to visit in November.
 
Many thanks for all the replies folks. Very helpful and insightful. Loads of food for thought. If we shorten our trip then we can probably stay somewhere a bit nicer OR we can stay somewhere cheaper and I can buy ringside (almost) tickets for the GSP vs Kendricks UFC fight which is conveniently happening at the same time as we will be over :-)

I don't really know what we plan on doing yet once there. Probably the usual touristy stuff. We definitely want to go skydiving and see a good show.

How expensive is food and drinks? We aren't the A La Carte type, more mainstream American food is our cup of tea. We have been to Florida every year for the last 7 so are prices comparable to Orlando?
 
I spent a month in Vegas, effing ace but after three weeks I had enough

The ppl in the street offering u cards with hooker details gets v annoying

MGM is ace, in fact all the main hotels have something different, check out a nightclub called 'rains' it's fucking brill!!!!!

And go on the stratosphere ride :thumbsup:
 
Breakfast on the ground at the bottom of the Grand Canyon is really special - though as Stu says, not cheap. It was £250 pp when I was there in 2008.

Also visited a great club called Seamless. More than once :evil:
 
I remember eating at the Cheesecake Factory which was not expensive and very nice. Might want to share a slice of cheesecake for dessert because I think on average one slice is 1000 cals, IIRC

Freemont street is well worth a visit.I went in 1998 and 2003 to vegas and have done the helicopter into the Grand Canyon for a champagne type lunch.On the flight to the Grand Canyon we flew over Hoover Dam and on the way back we flew over the strip.Well worth it for the memories if you record it.The sports cars that you can hire were tempting,Viper,Porsche,Ferrari etc........ :driving:

I think it was about £180 in 1998 for the chopper ride,and it was 120 degrees in the Canyon!
I like Vegas,I bet it has changed a lot from 2003.They were building the mono rail then.
 
I just remembered, there is a great Ferrari showroom/collection at the Wynn. I believe that it is free, and is the one thing that I wish I had seen on my last visit.

Same, not my cup of tea. Waaaay too much electricity being wasted. I'm more of a natural environment for holidays person.

Right on Ruby, my best times in the USA have been in the Northern California redwoods, Yosemite, and Wyoming. Can't beat the great outdoors.
 
By a really strange coincidence I'm in the Las Vegas airport now on the way out to Orlando having spent 4 nights here! :lol:

We stayed in the Luxor, which was good but as others have said any of the main names: Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, New York (roller coaster on the roof), MGM, Bellagio, Venitian (check out the indoor gondola rides on the first floor!), Caesars Palace would be good. They are all huge and have lots to offer, but you end up walking a lot so in hindsight I would have stayed in one more central on the strip such as New York or MGM.

Not being gamblers or clubbers 4 days and nights was enough for us and it was part of a 14 day package. So we're off to Orlando now where it's pissing it down! :(
 
I got married in Vegas errrrrr 2 or 3 years ago (not sure which :D )

Stayed at the Belaggio in one of their delux suites .........
was there for 14 days, had a corvette for the whole period and did the canyon chopper trips etc ......

I would make the comment that doing vegas on a budget would be miserable ..... closing your eyes to the cost and just getting on with it (ie maxing out all your cards :cry: ) makes it a whole new and different experience ....... we had a fantastic time .........
no change from 7000 pounds though ......
