Anyone been to Murcia?

I've been given the opportunity to rent a friend's lovely villa in Murcia this summer. I've only ever been to some of the main cities in Spain and wondered what Murcia and the region is like, if there's much going on, what the beaches are like, etc. If anyone has any tips to help me decide that would be great. Thanks

I was close to there last week. The temp was 25 deg in the shade.
The place we stayed was between Los Montesinos and Vistabella. We didn't visit any beaches but there are some nice ones close to Torreviega which itself has a nice front. There are some nice reseraunts in San Miguel de Salinas.Torremendo is worth a visit. There are lots of markets selling all sorts.
A strange site is seeing young women on roundabouts touting for business .

My parents lived not far from there for nearly 10 years so I spent quite a bit of time there. If you hire a car whilst you are there, it is a lovely region to be in. Some great places to eat and nice coastal towns to visit. There are also a couple of huge shopping malls if you like that kind of thing. I can recommend a nice restaurant called Rebate, its in the middle of nowhere but fantastic views and amazing food.

Brilliant area to stay. Been going there for years, staying in Hurchillo near Orihuela. Murcia itself is cracking, lots to see and do. +1 for Torrevieja especially the Restaurante Bahia at Cabo Roig on the marina. Also Carl's Bar in Los Montesinos, Monte Orchello and Bar Amour in Hurchillo, Pipi's Dream in Orihuela. The beaches are fantastic Guardamar del Segura, Horadada La Marina all good. Elche is a nice place to visit. Alicante is also good Castillo Santa Barbara worth a visit, be prepared to walk, lots of water required.Good for a stroll along the sea front, eat, drink and watch the world go by. TBH we just load up the car and off we go to see what can be found, the kids call it Dad's Magical Mystery tours and yes i have got lost, got on a road that leads to nowhere but thats all part of it. Enjoy and have fun..   I know you will...

I was there for a week last year at this time, staying at a friend's villa.

I liked it, it's different to 'tourist' Spain, although there are a lot of Brits there it's mainly villa and apartment owners. No high rise hotels. I was close to Puerto de Mazarron, which seemed more like the sort of place that the Spanish go to for a break.

Prices for food and drink were ridiculously cheap, even at least years exchange rates. Going to be even better now!

great for golf :)

The villa is actually in Hacienda del Alamo which is a massive golf course in Fuerte Alamo. Been looking at flights and its approximately £500 return June-Aug so might delay till Sept as thats more than myself and friends want to pay for a flight to Spain.

Been there... Twice... Only meant to go there once... Once of those funny moments in hindsight :D

The golf course there was playing hard and fast when we were visiting and was "testing" so say the least. Good track.

El Valle we played. Great course. I'll try to find the name of the resort we stayed at, it had an Irish pub that was good fun and I've just found the drunken karaoke pictures

500 for flights to Spain is ridiculous! Really winds me up how they rip off families and teachers in school holidays

I've never paid over £500 return for the 4 of us to Alicante.(During kids holidays, book early as Fred Pontin used to say.) Flights into Murcia to tend to a bit more though. It really is a great area to visit, just go with the local flow.......and........relax...... 8)

I thought booking now for August was early. I'm generally last minute. Oh and the flights with multiple airlines are certainly coming up around that figure, I've tried with both the airports too - Murcia and Alicante (we have to book Sat-Sat for the villa, ? expensive day to travel. Guess we aren't restricted to those dates and will likely book for Sept when prices go down.

I'm lucky in that we rarely visit Spain during the kids holidays. Prices have risen though over the years, we used to fly for peanuts but then the government added on flight taxes (for our own good of course), then the airlines added on charges to carry the golf clubs, next you even had to pay for the main luggage. So what started out below £100 is now £200 (and rising) to fly to Malaga / Alicante with one main bag and a set of golf clubs.

We do still keep the costs down though by flying out on the early bird (5:40am) and coming back a little later than would be ideal. I'm sure that if we went out and came back on the most popular flights it would be substantially more.

Booking now for August btw is plenty of time.

I've just checked skyscanner again and flight prices are lower than the other day with similar dates. Averaging now £200-300. That's more reasonable. Don't know what's going on as another friend the other day also got higher end prices when checking. Might be time to book :)

I saw the title and said "I'm gonna come up with something clever and witty" like "iv been a few times" then after further analysis of the title, I realized it said Murcia and not Murica... Keep in mind I'm extremely tired due to coming home after working over time and its already 5:30am and no sleep yet. :zzzz:
By the way just thought I should say.
:worthless:
