Anybody wrapped their G29...?

Pondering a change to my strategy to get into Z4 motoring..

Now thinking of getting a second user G29 but not enthralled with the available colours.

Anybody wrapped / resprayed their cars?

Costs?

Any issues?

Any regrets?

Thanks for that posting..I think I'll be tempted to go for a proper respray in a nice metallic as I plan to keep the car for quite a period of time and do a few cosmetic and performance mods during that period.

Probably go for a white one as a base..copes with different colour resprays better than most colours.

The wraps seem to have a limited life and not convinced about their restoration in the same way as you can do with paint.

Yes that's very useful.

Maybe a click too bright.

The tint like the yellow E89 in a pearl or metallic I think would be perfect with some black accents.

I'll pop down to my local paint man and see what he says!

Looks like I need one with a black interior.

Ed I think this one is more like Atacama yellow, it’s not as easy to see in the pictures but it’s definitely not “as yellow” which is an odd thing to say for a completely yellow car

Andy, thanks, I'll look at a few more yellow bodyshells and hone down the choice..if I'm going to pay for a one off I think I'll go for a pearl/metallic..correct me but the E89 yellow is a 'normal' paint with a normal lacquer on top?

Ed, according to the brochure, non metallic. If you really like that colour your paint guy should be able to a a metallic/pearlescent flip to the paint. The only issue with that is if you need a repair. I had that with a Cavalier SRi130 years ago. It was blue and I got a purple flip in it. Then someone ran into it and they couldn’t match the paint. When it was resprayed the second time they made up a couple of extra litres of paint and kept it. Just as well as it needed a side blown in after that, my boy racer days.....................

My paint man is top notch, he points out body colour mismatches I can't see.

Have you already bought the car?

Cost depends on what you want can start at about 1500 for a wrap up to 10k euro and more

My first wrap was about 3000 second one is 4000 euro.

In case you would plan to wrap it its best to use a darker base color, that way you can wrap it cheaper since you dont need to dissasemble the entire car to wrap inside the gaps between panels.

Paint-wise it might be worth it informing if it is possible to order a Z4 with individual colors.

If you want to keep the paint in good shape don't wrap it, I rewrapped it recently because of a minor accident, end the paint below the wrap was full of minor scratches, and I also have/had a few cutting marks inside the paint and lights (I went to the biggest wrapping company in the country, but you can still get a student or a bad wrapper that makes some mistakes).

One thing i also might try in the future is "plasti-dipping" the car which combines both the removability of a wrap with the finish of a paint job. But looking at the process it might be very expensive

If I could go back I wouldn't wrap mine again, I would probably have informed about the individual colors first, or would have tried ordering one only base coated and then getting it painted elsewhere. Normally they are pretty flexible at the dealership if you throw enough cash at them, I know of someone here who had his seats done in the same leather of the handbags in his handbag company, so I'm pretty sure a paint color will be something that can also be discussed

I wasn’t aware that you could get custom colours to order, I’ll have a look.

My current thought process is to sit ready with my cash and move quickly when I see a suitable 2nd user car...I’m hoping with a bag of cash I can get a suitable deal.

I’m keen to do a few mods, time is short when you get older, so buying new and being locked into a warranty is not necessarily a good idea for me.

A custom paint job on a discounted 2nd user car hopefully is cheaper than paying top whack for a custom ordered M40i?

Yes I think buying it used and then respraying it will probably end up being cheaper in most cases

Decided on a color yet?
i did some color trials in a race game im playing , its based on wrap colors, but it might give you some ideas

So I think it’s ideally a pearl / metallic version of the E89 yellow, not the E85 yellow.

I’ll chat with my paint man this Friday and see what he thinks.

Ed, Sytner in Oldbury, where I bought my VO, have a White M40i, no pictures but they’ll do a personalised video and pictures. Seems reasonably well loaded packs wise and has shadowline pack and black interior

Andy, thanks for that...given the lock down (still) I’m inclined to wait and see if I can get a private / non BMW dealer car...prices are obviously a bit toppy from a main dealer and I’m willing to take the risk on pissing on a BMW warranty with the mods I’m looking at.

Frustrating but I’m now into a longer haul mindset, the burning desire to get a roadster has frankly waned a bit courtesy of the pandemic.

I’ve gone back to work part time at my old place to keep me occupied.

It seems like the used car market has just frozen with little stock....

Ed, I fear your enthusiasm may wane even further, to the best of my knowledge this is the only White M40i that’s come on the market in the last 12 weeks + except brand new ones which obviously given your previous response doesn’t suit because of warranty and mods.

The M40i market is very strong in certain colours the only ones readily available 2nd hand are black/red/frozen orange and even then the prices are strong and the choice limited. When you start drilling down to interior colours/option packs the pool is even further narrowed.

Again to the best of my knowledge there’s only one blue M40i for sale in the country, a 21 plate with 3 options packs but an ivory interior, there’s no other new ones available except for going to a dealer and buying one, getting a build slot and waiting.!

I suspect we are victims of our own negativity.

As I recall when the G29 came out it was dammed with faint praise by the press, mostly still against the Boxster and the existing Z4 owners didn’t rush to embrace it.

I don’t know what annual sales of it are like, I think there is a web site that shows how many were sold in the UK, but I bet it’s not much.

I’m sure when I first started looking there were quite a few yellow E89s on the market but they have largely gone, I see 2 on AT, one over priced and the other under spec’d
