Anybody know what this is?

you mean the big black cap, under that is where the oil filter is

Yeah! in the second picture you can see where the oil is coming out, any idea what a leak from there might mean??

What a leak for there might mean? Well if oil is leaking from the oil filter housing then you'd do well to check it's tightened up correctly.

My concern would be that if you are getting spots of oil on the drive then it has been leaking a lot as normally it would be caught on the undertray

Clean the housing and see where the leak is actually coming from and if you are unsure of what to do get into a local garage. It's just messy not serious to the engine

Nice one! I'll get the hammer out in the morning and remove it! It does look like its leaking pretty bad as there are pools of oil in the various cavities around the engine below it. I'll clean it up and see if i can tighten it tomorrow. Now I know what it is, it doesn't sound like anything too major... :D

Thanks for your help, appreciate it

When was the oil last changed??
I would do an oil and filter change, you get new oil filter housing seals with the new filter.

If oil is leaking from the join between the alloy filter housing and the black plastic cap then it's highly likely the 'o'ring seal is damaged/missing. As mentioned by firebobby you get a new 'o' ring in the box with a new oil filter. There's no point in just tightening the cap itself without checking first. Don't over tighten the cap, 25Nm as written on it. If it's not the 'o'ring then it will probably be the oil filter housing gasket itself...a much bigger job altogether unfortunately.

If the leek looks lower, i have heard the lower seals can go

it looks like its lower than the O ring, it's where the housing meets the engine. I have no idea when the filter was last changed either so I guess its its time to get it in the garage
