Anybody had vanos problems ?

OK picked the car up last night - they did me a deal on the labor cost so I paid another £200 on top of the service 1 cost :D

The dealer showed me the costings on the sheet and on the screen so I have no doubt that the work has been done and it was in the thousands - also that some of the parts will be returned to BMW for investigation. Also looked at the sheet and all the lifters were checked and within specification.

I only drove the car for about 10miles home and will be away all weekend but noticed that the vanos noise around 3k which I know is a characteristic of the engine is now very quiet. The ticking noise will wait to next week as this is more noticable on the way to work but it sounded a lot quieter on the whole.

Don't know about you guys but I think I was very lucky in a way :P the warranty ran out in November last year and before I realised they put it up another £400 as it was 20 days late - I thought at £1250 for the year, I could get a lot of repairs done for that so I didn't bother and I'm still up about £600 :D

got to admit though I was sweating all day yesterday and the night before...

The chap said that if it hadn't spent its life within the dealer network or had the run in service BMW would not have wanted to know.... eeek

A failure like this could be challenged on the basis that it's a latent defect or even pursue fit for purpose warranty legislation.

certainly if their is no evidence of abuse to the car and the mileage is low I would fight if they tried to fob me off.

Good to see that they didnt take you to the cleaners in the end.

Errr... Mate, check yer facts - the S54 has solid lifters, which are shimmed... So no tappets in our cars

As he said above, EdButler was referring to the N52, not S54 :poke:

(although I presume the OP has an ///M, so the above is not of relevance anyway)

Whoops sorry about the confusion chaps, i was on my phone and didnt see the //M section, i just assumed it would have been an N52

Good news that it's sorted with little cost to you.
Marbles in a can, rattles rumbles, difficult to know wat you're listening to. I think any sudden increase in noise levels should be a warning to you and worth getting checked.

I am new here, living in Switzerland and driving a Z4M QP, bought it with ~4000km end of 2009 and had a VANOS replacement, under warranty in Jan. this year (luckily 3years warranty here in CH), the engine sounded like following when it had around 50'000km:

Not driven on tracks, mostly highway, not much city driving. Yes, it's a car I use for :driving: , not storing in a garage :D I spent quite some time on the road, and I want to enjoy it. I put another 11000 km on it since the repair, everything is fine.

I was very happy with the way BMW and the dealer managed the problem, although it took some time (due to back and forth with Munich for warranty, and the fact that they forgot the dealer), in the meantime the dealer lent me at his own cost a 330xi, which I drove for 6 weeks.

I will most likely pay for a warranty extension if available as I want to keep the car beyond the current warranty deadline in April 2012.

hii.. great first post & welcome!

That's a horrible noise in the vid :( Glad to see you're using yours too, I've done similar mileage.

Get some pics of your car in the newbies section!

Hi Andy,

here are two pics, from last winter, you will see that I am also using it with quite some snow on the road

wow that noise is not good in the video - mine was nothing like that.

After a weeks usage I still can hear the ticking noise :(

Engine has to be warm and noise happens when off the throttle between 1k and 2k - the car has definately gained a tick but is quieter than before...

Mostly notice it while driving through town i.e 20 to 30 mph

When stationary it sound fine

I will get Worcester to check it out again for me as they said to return if I wasnt happy.

Mitch

there is always a noise though, so don't get too paranoid listening for it & let it ruin the experience..

Welcome to listen to mine & see if you're still worried.
