Any wheel/tyre gurus? Another winter tyre question.

when i put my reg number in on tyre sites they always quote 225/35/19 for front and 255/35/19 for rear although we know this is wrong

Ah well, plenty of options…your call..

SARS where does it list 255/40 R18 as the recommended set up?

6th and 5th from the bottom of the BMW table I posted, though I think this will be for the M40i as I’d be surprised if 17” rims fit the larger brakes, that being said if you have the MSport brakes, I wonder if the 17” wheels would actually fit either.

Ah yes thnx

Here is a pic of my wheels (or one of them). As has been said, they are 255 R40 18s. BMW keeps them in storage. I'm just contemplating when to change them - think towards the end of November.winters.jpg

Those can't have been cheap.

No, but my experience of owning a separate set of wheels and winter tyres for previous cars is that if they don't fit a new car they sell easily at a good price recouping a goodly part of the initial investment.

That part sounds fine, my worry, if my fiancée found out the outlay, is keeping my testicles within their original bag and in their original shape.

I did ask earlier in the thread but think that my question may have got lost so I'll ask again :)

I have 225/45 ZR18 on the fronts and 255/40 ZR18 on the rears of my 20i and am wondering if I can just buy the same sized winter tyres and fit them on my existing wheels as I don't want to go to great expense as I don't really know how long I'll keep the car

Yes you can, although there is obviously some loss of value in binning the part worn set of tyres you are replacing; unless you keep them of course, but removing/refitting tyres doesn’t do them any good.

I won't be binning the summer tyres as I've only done 1,000 miles on them. I was thinking of using someone like ATS as I think that they have a tyre hotel and can store the set that aren't in use

Try Savoy tyres, they will get you a set of winters/all season tyres, fit them and then store the summers for a you, if you sell the car you go and get the ones that are stored, costs about £60 per year to swap them over and store them.

Thanks but I was hoping for somewhere a bit closer to home. ATS are supposed to operate a tyre hotel but they don't seem to have any suitable winter tyres. I emailed my salesman at Sytner over a week ago but haven't had a reply and having also completed the contact form on Sytner's website I haven't had a response to that either

For the kind of money we are talking about here I'd just buy a second car thats more suited to the likely road conditions in your area. My Ford Focus was brilliant when the beast of east hit us a few years ago.

If you run any car in damp and low temperature conditions on summer tyres, be it front wheel drive, rear wheel drive or four wheel drive it ain’t going to help you stop as quickly than on winter or all season tyres, especially when you need too :!:

As Brundle keeps saying be on the right tyre at the right time.

I will be on the opposite side. Instead of buying another car that you think may suit for certain weather, spend the money on a set of proper winter wheels. After trying it, you will know the difference. Last year in the Peak, my rear wheel drive BMW with winter tyre simply over took multiple cars, which are described as suitable in the snow, uphill. Also, I've seen a ford simply couldn't stop when downhill and slided into a ditch. There was also a chance that I saw exactly same car as mine with summer tyer struggled to get uphill and slide backward even when four wheels were not rotating. Then after a minute of watching him, I considered it to be a threat to my car so I just set off and drive away with a gentle wave to the other driver.

As many have said depends where you live ..as a q96169we said it’s chalk n cheese..my former business partner lives in Tideswell in the Peak District..his Pug 208 on winter tyres would go places where Chelsea Tractors would be stuck / sliding out of control..

Like many things until you’ve tried it you don’t know what you are missing…those folks living in big cities may be excused and similar profiles of use..

After struggling with a 1 Series in early 2010 I bought some winters for my daily in 2015 and fitted them for 3 winters, but we never had any bad weather!

A few weeks before the Beast from the East I bought a 325i Touring that came with winters - I was amazed how good they were so I'd echo what B21 said!

I've been fitting winters to my daily every year since, just in case.

Any doubters should look at this review of a 4 wheel drive on summer tyres versus a front wheel drive car on winter tyres on the snow at Tamworth Snowdome and the results may surprise some of the doubters

https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/66692/winter-tyres-4x4-grip-test-video

Incidentally a few other motoring media also conducted similar tests at the same place and Googling "tyre test at Tamworth Snowdome" will bring them up

I would go with a second set of wheels, with Full Winter tyres.
Ran my previous zed every winter from the second winter I owned it onwards,a while back granted..
But on Full winter Vredestein tyres,my 3.0i z never got stuck, even in heavy snow,as we had some winters.
The first year I owned my first z,I got stuck in snow a couple.of times, never happened on the Winters, even got up steep hills no bother.

So,I would say buy a set of Winter tyres.
All season tyres are ok as a compromise, had them on previous cars too,for many years, but you can notice the difference.
Look at Vredestein winters,Snowtrac or Wintrac, imaginatively titled lol, they used to be called, really good tyres, Scubaregs
