Any Tips on Boot Adjustment?

When I went over bumps it sounded like the boot was slightly open and it made a noise like it was opening and closing a little. So I thought how hard can this be I’ll twist these little knobs and make it tighter!

Well after about 5 attempts I can either make it impossible to shut the boot without really slamming it or it rattles. Why can’t I just leave things alone!

So does anyone have the secret to adjusting the boot knobs? Is it just suck it and see? Should both be equal as I’ve been trying or do they need to be different heights?

its just a game or trial and error i think. both adjusters dont have the be the same, just make them fit however you need to. Also try adjusting the striker catch on the car too, ull have to take the plastic boot trim of to do this tho.

z4coupe, are all the shut lines on the boot nice and level, when I bought mine, the boot lid sat slightly high, when I checked the striker catch, it was loose, I just dropped the striker down to the bottom, tightened it up and that did the trick.

As fatmikey said you would need to remove the plastic trim to adjust the striker, but it's a 2 minute job.

Thanks for the replies guys makes me feel less mad ;) I've got my car in bits at the moment finding rattles.

The shut lines seem fine to me but if I have no luck with the trial and error I'll have a look.

I thought some one might have an insider secret on how the trade do the adjustments but it sounds like I'm on the right path.

I think it's going to be mm adjustments that sort it, but it only rattles when I go over humps or bumps so I need to test drive between each twist.

You might also try replacing the "strikers" with the ones that have the ejector pin, like what is used on the hood (bonnet). I think, but I'm not absolutely sure, the p/n is 51248187291. These will put a little spring tension on the boot when it is closed, and make it pop up a little more when it is opened. I have them installed on my Zed, but I am just not sure of the p/n. because there are a couple of different spring tensions available.

After 20+ tweaks and test drives I was beginning lose the will!

Until I tried a test drive with the boot cover (roller blind thing) unclipped and the rattle was gone. I'm not 100% it's gone but it didn't rattle all the way home. I'm going to run with the cover rolled back for a few days and see how it goes.
