I bought a 2008 Z4 3si few months ago. It had only about 16K miles. So I think the car should have still good, solid suspension. But maybe not.
I recently doing brakes on this car and this is what I found.

That is passenger side control arm. Anyone knows what is that piece in yellow circle? There is nothing like this on the driver side control arm.
I took out that bolt to examine it. It was holding some metal tube as shown in the picture which seems to be broken. I don't know what that does or why I have this only on passenger side but not on driver side.

The seller told me that he replaced passenger side strut because it was bad. But he did not say anything about control arm. Did he replace this control arm with some used part from another model car????

Overall, I feel that the suspension of my z4 is somewhat loose. I don't know how it should feel like if everything is new because I've never drove any new z4.
I hear many different kind of noises when I go over bump from both front and back side of car.
I think either the previous owner had some mishap or drove mostly on the bad road with lots of pot holes in stop and go traffic.

And please see below picture.

This is the passenger side strut which the previous owner replaced. He said that he put a new strut. But seems like the spring is not properly installed. As you can see in the yellow circle, the spring is sitting across the edge of the lower support (How do you call this???) To me this does not seem right.

So I checked driver side, it it does not look like passenger side. The spring is NOT sitting across the edge of the support base.

Is this wrong or normal?

I want to fix the suspension to to make it feel like solid and new. Where should I start?

Thinking to replace all the shocks and struts with bilstein or koni. Which one do you recommend? I don't want to lower my vehicle. Just want to make mine handle better without lowering.

Is coil over worth to consider?

Thanks!!

The first pic is I think the xenon self levelling sensor, there's one on the front and one on the rear.

Oh and welcome

Yes. that is right. I found it out from the part diagram. Looks like the car was in some accident or the guy who replaced the strut did not know he needed to disconnect sensor arm before installing.
I will go under my car today and see what parts are need to be replaced.

Anyway, anyone make a comment on that coil spring?

One simple test is to ask to sensibly drive another owner's Zed who's happy the way it drives.

Appreciate you're in the USA, otherwise I'd let you have a cruise in mine

The spring isn't sat right in the pads. I had the same which resulted in a knocking as the spring shifted on corners, bumps etc. You need to jack it up and see if you can reseat it. If not, slightly compress the spring so you can.
