Any pre-09 coupe mods to allow access to boot from cabin??

I have an 07 Z4 3.0si coupe, which I really like.

However, the bulkhead behind the seats is particularly problematic.
1) I'm tall, so I require the seat all the way back, tilted and lowered. The seat rubs against the bulkhead and I still could use an inch or two more of room.
2) Most hatchback cars have some sort of access to the rear boot from the front seats. Not in the coupe. There literally is no way to access the rear except to get out of the car and open the trunk. Even my 911 has more cabin storage than this coupe!

Does anyone know of modifications done to the cabin that opens up the back of the cabin to allow inside storage and access to items in the boot? I'd even give up the rear sound system to have more room.

You could remove the centre storage shelves and if you have nav move the dvd to the bottom... That would give you the hole big enough for some ski's to pass through.

A strange one indeed 8) i can't think of any vehicle ive owned where i needed to access the boot without leaving the drivers seat 8)
i do agree though there is more storage room in a 911 but then there's even more room in a cayenne :roll:
you do get a holder for sunglasses though :)
 
1) Chop a couple of inches off your legs/spine, or modify the roof so it has a raised area for your head (like on the rear car in this photo) :P

2) leave the cover in it's retracted position and you can reach over (with difficulty) to access items in the boot. I sometimes use this method to stow stuff I've had in the passenger seat and no longer require.
 
tin snips would sort a hatch out though i imagine the bulkhead acts as a strut brace so trimming it all out is probably a bad idea. Why not take it to a coach-builder and see what they say. I would be interested to hear their views.

Not quite, there is only a small hole at the bottom of the bulkhead, nothing further up.

TBH if you want storage a Z4 isnt the car for you.

If I need to do stuff like that I borrow my wife's Mazda 2.

Goddam it's a practical car!
 
I guess the answer is no: no one knows of modifications to the coupe rear bulkhead to improve rear access and accommodation for seat travel. As some of you point out, it must take too much structural modificatios.

On the question of using "the wife's Mazda 2," I really like to drive good cars as a daily driver, not just weekenders and Sunday drives -- hence looking for an ounce of practicality, along with performance. The Japanese discovered this in the 80s -- introducing functional AC/heating, practicality, sleek design, and performance, making the conventional sports car market look archaic. Even GM and Porsche undertook changes especially in the 90s to wake up.

Know what you mean , I had the nissan silvia , 1988 model . bought it 3 yrs old & couldn't believe the kit you got as standard compared to the ford orion ghia i traded in
unfortunately the downside to jap ownership is a totally numb inside feel combined with a complete lack of style & design on the outside :(
it seem's you can't have your cake & eat it :)
 
I'm suprised no one has picked up on the seat rubbing issue. I'm also quite tall and have to put the seat all the way back and hate it rubbing. I have considered removing the plastic trim on the back of the seat. I'm not sure what sort of mess you are left with but I'm sure you'd get another inch.

Not a bad idea. I will check what it will take and its cosmetic impact. At least the driver's side.
 
I guess it can depend on how comfortable you are, and whether you are longer in the leg or torso etc... TBH I find that my seats in the e89 are the same, fully back to get comfortable. I too would have liked them to have made the cabin just that bit deeper to go back perhaps one more inch to feel fully relaxed.

Oh yeah you are quite right.. its only a very small hole at the bottom behind the NAV :headbang:
