Hi all-am I breaking any laws by putting my car across the pavement for 20 seconds while I go back and close my garage door?-as our garage is lower than the road and I don't want to continually trust my handbrake I drive the front wheels into the gutter while I go back and close the garage door-I know I am causing an obstruction but can I get fined for doing this?-thanks

as far as I understand unless there is a H line or yellow lines you can legally block a dropped kerb - or are you parking on the actual pavement? if so for 20 seconds I don't think anyone would care

It sounds from your description like you are blocking the pavement. I guess it depends how busy the pavement is and whether pedestrians have to step into the road (Im not police btw).

It's illegal to block or park on a pavement in the UK, unless there are signs allowing this. Just depends if you get reported for it or a passing bobby takes exception to you.

You can park in front of somebody's driveway though as long as their car is not on it/in the garage.

Whaaaat - you're taking the p*ss, surely? :D Or are you just saying that seems to be the belief of many people who blatantly block driveways?
It's illegal to block ANY driveway here (including your own) as it restricts access to emergency vehicles (not to mention the poor owner of the driveway if they decide to return while you're blocking it  )

Just red that link Steve
An can't believe that's how it is
Have had the same problem as described in the link ever since getting back in to car ownership
18months on it still continues, they park in the way I go ask them to move so annoying.
If I get there before anyone else I have to put the van across the garage
But then its a pita if I want to get the zed out ,like musical cars.
But no one parks in front of the open driveways a few doors down.
Maybe I should take it personally

It would be against the law if you leave the engine running while closing the garage door, would it not?

True - you would no longer be in control of your vehicle and as pvr has stated, you wouldn't be insured whilst doing so. If you do have to follow this routine, turn the engine off and take the keys with you as you close the garage door.

You might want to get your hand brake working properly too.

I may be wrong, but I think the hand brake is working fine - From his initial post I believe the issue is that he doesn't want to 'continually trust it'. So more of a psychological issue.

Thanks for the link, I think a few of the UK members will be just as surprised as I am at that law. I can't believe someone can block access to a driveway you have legal ownership of - just sounds bizarre.
This is NZ law on driveway parking:
You can be issued an infringement notice if you park illegally on public land, or in breach of what a parking sign says. In some circumstances your vehicle can also be towed away, for example, if it is obstructing traffic. This includes if you park on the road, directly in front of someone’s driveway so that they cannot use the driveway to enter or leave their property.
