who knows for sure, but usually the last year of production means more options become standard so that the manufacturer can unload parts that cant be carried over to the new model. So things like CD-changer, cruise, heated seats, etc may become standard on certain models.... :driving:

I wouldn't expect any changes since this is the last model year, and if rumors are correct it will be a shortened production year as well (May 2008 has been floated as the end of Z4 production).

So the 2008 Z4 is the last one before a model change? I know I had heard a while ago (~1-2yrs ago) that the new z4 would come out as an '09 in Fall '08. However, for the last 6 months I have only heard of the new z4 ariving as a '10 at the earliest of spring/summer '09 but more likely fall '09. This would mean that there would still be an '09 model of the current Z4.

Also if the stopped making the current z4 in May of this year, when would we see the new z4? Also wouldn't you think there would be more spy shots, maybe an autoshow appearance of this new Z4 if it was to hit showrooms in late this year? I mean there have not been any new spy shots in about 3-4 months and the car would be selling in about 8 months?

I am not questioning your facts, I am just curious, and now really excited for a new Z4 to be here a year before I thought!

I've got no facts, just rumors and speculation. But I wouldn't expect the '09 model to launch this fall necessarily, as it's a roadster. Porsche releases the new Boxsters in March, giving the press time to review the car before the spring/convertible buying season. Why release a new roadster in September, when most of the market is going to be putting them away?

What would strike me as more important, as a theoretical BMW exec, would be to get my SUV/SAV factory producing the new 2009 models in time for winter. Again, I'm just spitballing ideas, here.

This is why I think there will be '09 of the current Z4.

Yep quite a good piece that.

I wonder what the top engine will be - 4.0 V8 or 3.0 twin-turbo...or maybe the 3.0 diesel twin-turbo :D

If the X6 starts production in June 2008, and they're already building the X3 and X5 there, I'd think the Z4 has got to get bumped. The next car might debut in fall of 2009 from the Regensburg plant, but that just means they'd stop making a Z car for about 12 months. Considering that 2007s are still sitting on lots, BMW could probably end Z4 production in May 2008 and have enough cars left to meet demand until the new car arrives, sad as that fact may be.

+1 Bmw mid December press release also said early second quarter to see the X6. With the 1 series coming out (1 series convertible also), it makes sense to end the Z4 early spring with Spartanburg dedicated to SUV's. I find it hard to believe something has not been leaked or released about the end run date of the Z4. Although as stated in posts the Z4 is just not selling. A search on auto trader for new and late model used Z4's show there are plenty to be had. So we enthusiast's are really the only ones concerned or curious about the Z4's future. They could end production this month and I do not really think anyone (outside us forum members and other Z enthusiast's) would notice or really care. My two cents!

As an admirer of the Z4 since its inception, and now a proud new owner of a Z4, I am not disappointed that the Z4 will be redesigned in 2009 or 2010. After reading the article on Edmunds, I think the biggest change will be the retractable hard top. I much prefer the soft top of the current Z4 to the retractable hard top, particularly since I don't and will not be driving the Z4 during the winter months. In addition, from the spy pictures I've seen online, aside from the various body indentations making the Z4 look like a modern version of the Bat Mobile, the shape of the body has not changed much (as compared to the drastic change in body style from the Z3 to Z4). In my opinion, the current Z4 body is more attractive and more elegant than the redesigned style. In any event, I can't wait until the redesigned Z4s come out so I can get a deal on a 2007 or 2008 M Roadster!

Are you sure they are producing the X3 in Greer?

The X3 is currently built in Austria by a company named Magna Steyr, but X3 production is moving to Spartanburg. Sorry, got ahead of myself there. It's when BMW announced pulling the X3 from Austria that they said they'd make all of the X-series cars in the US, since we're the biggest market for those.

I really would hate to see the next iteration as a larger vehicle, but it certainly is headed in that direction.

My Zed is big enough as a sportscar...

I agree, but rumors are that there will be two Zs. A small Miata like roadster (Z3 redux) and a larger, pricier version following on from the Z9. Both bad ideas, imo, but no one asked me.
