Any place in particular to purchase a 3rd brake light?

Hi Chaps,

The 3rd brake light lens was coming away from the unit so I decided to take the whole thing out to investigate. The lens came away separately from the unit and also is in 2 bits (cracked down the middle, fell apart when I tried to take the light out). Is anyone aware of any deals on these units at all? A new one off the bay from BMW is £95.11!

Having had a read its a very common issue!
 
Sophers Lincoln offer forum discount and free delivery. The 3rd brake lights are main dealer only so unless you get trade discount somewhere Sophers would probably be your best bet. Make sure you get the proper revised springs if you dont have them already and you might want to consider the clear version that lots on here (including me) have. Its actually alot cheaper bizarrely!
 
Thanks Mack, I did see Sophers mentioned in other threads but the threads were quite old. Will give them a call tomorrow. Will see what the difference on price is before I decide on the lens colour. I tinted my clear lights red and they came out good, will probably get the clear one if it cheaper and tint it myself.
 
The clear one is available on eBay for £53.20.

As said, buy new springs or you'll end up having to replace it again in a year, as the brake light surround seems to enjoy cracking.

Make sure you get the 40N rated 63 25 6 900 698 springs listed in the service bulletin from march 2006. Not the 63257151981 82N listed currently on Real Oem as there the same as original and as Ben says you'll soon be placing the light again. Ask me how I know :rofl: . You'll also need the washers 0711 9931105 to use with the small new springs otherwise they just pass through the mounting holes in the inside of the boot/trunk.
 
Looking for third brake light too as mines due mot in a month don’t know if a cracked light is a fail to be honest under new regs.waiting for any reply from breakers yard but none as yet
So maybe I’ll need to ring this garage too

I have gone for the clear one from BMW on ebay at £53. Will tint it myself, thanks for the part numbers, will call my local BMW to get the washers and springs ordered.

Just replaced mine last week, didn't know about the springs though so I will get those ordered too. Is the only place to get them from a BMW dealer?
 
I wold guess so, they are a pretty unique parts. I ordered the springs and washers yesterday, it's about £6 all in.
 
Afternoon all, recently purchased a non-genuine light from eBay, unfortunately this hasn't come with the foam gasket/seal fitted. Can this be bought separately? I suspect not, realOEM doesn't show anything

Bought mine off ebay and fitted it in April 2019. It was a Chinese knock off job but it fitted perfectly and it still works great. My old one had cracked down the middle, so following Forum advice I didn't overtighten the bolts, so on close inspection it might look as if the unit is not flush with the boot profile at the edges, but as I say, so far so good.
Cost £23.87 all in from Auto-Fashion (China).

Not bought one of these personally but usually their stock is pretty good and reliable.
Tomtop do not offer but again theye carry a few parts for all BMW's

You can't, I'd suggest informing them it's faulty (which it is, no seal will allow moisture into the boot) and negotiating a discount then try some flexible sealant.
 
I bought a clear lens 3rd brake light off ebay from MagicitUk and the fitment was terrible. The curvature did not match the boot / the outer edges were not flush. Furthermore the gasket was rubber with no give. I've returned it, but was keen to know if anyone found a decent part that fits well with a foam/neoprene gasket, or if its best to go OEM/BMW? Could you post a link if you'd found a good aftermarket or how much you paid for original BMW part? thanks

I bought a replacement for my E85 (facelift, so clear third brake light) from LLP Parts, OEM part no 63256930246: https://www.lllparts.co.uk/en/lightning/third-brake-lights-fog-lights/bmw-z4-e85-new-genuine-3rd-third-brake-rear-tail-light-stop-lamp-white-6930246-93682?. It's not cheap at £76.75 but the quality is excellent (as you would expect from genuine parts) and comes with the rubber seal (but not new springs or screws which I bought separately but I could have equally have used the old ones).

They also have the red coloured third brake light for the pre-facelift model E85, the part number is 63256917378 and can be found here fro the same price https://www.lllparts.co.uk/en/light...tailgate-3rd-third-red-brake-stop-light-6149?

I just purchased one from Banggood for £23.
Fitted just as well as the BMW OEM which was from 2015 so is also a replacement.
Came with a rubber gasket but I also sealed it in with clear sikicone.
The plug fitted but was very tight

The OEM was £87 +
I would be interested to hear how much as I rang Sopers 3 times but there was never anyine available in the parts dept so I gave up and ordered it online, I arrived within 4 days! :
