Any one else had a paint problem?

I spotted this bloody great patch of lacquer missing from the front of my 2.5 year old E89.

Any one else had this problem.

I've owned quite a few BM's and never had this before

That's absolutely shocking, remember when BMW used to be a premium brand

Was yours new? Possible respray over original paintwork could explain it?

BMW will sort it tho under warranty, still shocking.

They would not repair my previous X5 which had the same problem at the same location. They said it was stone chips where water had gotten underneath the clear laquer.

Well thats what the dealer said. claim is going forward to BMW and we'll see what they say.

Strangely I've had many many stone chips on all my bmw's and never had this problem. Dealer said it was quite prevalent on red cars for some reason.

STOP THE PRESS.

They saw the damage yesterday, just got the phone call to book the car in to have the front end resprayed under warranty.

RESULT

Nice result. Keep a beady eye on the quality of the respray! Odd it happened in the first place though, I have stone chips and none have done that. Looks more like a chemical reaction/burn on the photo.

I did wonder what it was, but i doubt it was a chemical.

Garage said it was likely the paint chip and water getting underneath. But as i said, never seen this before on any car i owned. damage has always been limited to the immediate area of the chip.

Anyway, this car lives mostly in the garage.

Even if it was an act of vandalism, its confined to that very spot. i cant see a vandal being that precise.

edit, there is a deep chip at the root of the patch.

Looking back up I can see the chip... However I would not expect that to happen from a stone chip. Very poor quality lacquer application methinks.

Great result though

Had the same thing happen on a red Polo, it ended up with about six saucer shaped patches on the bonnet & roof. All horizontal surfaces which get the sun most, it was nothing to do with stone chips but a reaction with the paint & sunlight. Traded the car into dealer as unable to sell privately with the paint like that.

Hope you have better luck than me, I will never own a red car again. 4 attempts and two body shops. And the paint never matched under artificial light. Ok in daylight, but under street lamps, garage forecourts etc, completely different colour.

And don't think that blending will solve, all that happens is you can see where the blends been done.

Depends how fussy you are... I'm fussy...

There is a word for it, I'll look at some old emails with the paint specialists and find the word

Looking at the rest of clearcote it doesn't look quite right to me, like semi gloss finish, looks almost as its had a repair. A stone chip shouldn't cause the laquer to peel unless moisture has got in. I've seen this before on a F20. same colour.

At least its getting repaired :)

Incompetence?

By looking at the picture you posted I would not say a stone chip is the cause. Its more likely to be a contaminant on top of the base/colour coat causing the clear coat to erupt and come away. Alternatively if it is a resprayed bonnet, whoever has carried out the repair has not prepped and cleaned the panel correctly. Bad prep = piss poor paint.
