Any known issues/problems with the 2.0 engine?

Hi guys,

Just wondered if there is any known issues or problems with the 2.0 engine? I've had a search around and couldn't find any so that's always a good sign.

Cheers :)

Beaten to it, I was just going to say it's missing 2 cylinders .

Seriously though it's a pretty bullet proof engine and they are able to keep up with the bigger engined cars on the runs.

Agreed... as a daily driver its worth thinking about what car really like it in 2.0.

as a weekend car on limited mileage insurance i think it a 3.0 is worth the small extra in insurance...

I had a cracked exhaust manifold on my 2007 2.0i, the car had less then 17k on the clock. It was under warranty and good job as a re-con manifold/cat was £800 on its own.

But then, it doesn't have an extra 100kg of weight to shove along the road.

The power equation :- + 2 cyl + 1,000cc = + 18mph - 2.5secs ......... not very efficient in my book.

Interestingly, What Car said "the one to go for - 2.0i" & "the one to avoid - 3.0i Sport"

As i said what car? rate the 2.0 very highly.... it just lacks that straight six sound...

specific output 2.0 74.2 bhp/litre 2.0 ; specific output 3.0 76.5 bhp/litre.... so the pound for pound is the same...

All I'll say is I love my 4-pot 2.0! I did have a bit of a crisis of confidence when the big boys were showing off their engines on the Skye run, but it kept up with the rest of them pretty easily :) .

Mine is a daily driver as well - definitely more than enough car for the daily commute!

It does not make the same sound as a 6 cylinder, so if you drive down the street dogs or cats taking a nap will not move an inch :) otherwise I think all is cool, then I cannot really say since my last car was a Z4 30is and before that a 333 HP M3 :)

I would trust what the fellows here have to say, they know there stuff :)

A remus exhaust could fix that problem

Do they do a remus for the 2.0i? hhmmmmm

To the OP, I've not heard of any issues. Did a fair bit of researching prior to purchase too.

Adding to the points already made, the 2.0 is soo good for an everyday commuter car. I'm in London and drive to work, its absolutely brilliant. Everyone is always going to make the point of it not been a straight 6 and yes it isn't, but its still a fantastic car. Love it to bits!!!

this is a well known problem of the bmw 4 pot engine - when it's in the 3 series as well. Other than that good car, i use mine for many mile in my sales job and think it's a fantasic compromise for fun/economy.

I've done 60,000 miles so far and problems have been
windscreen wiper motor broken but fixed under warrenty - around 35,000 miles
snapped rear spring (common Z4 problem) - around 50,000 miles
snapped exhaust bracket - annoyingly at around 50,010 miles!

then just normal servicing and consumables
