Any Golfers In The House?

Well after years of having the occasional laugh and smash and on a driving range, 3 weeks ago i was invited to play 9 holes at a local course and I really enjoyed it! I didn't expect too tbh! I've been 3 times now with a couple of mates, who have their own clubs (ive been borrowing my neighbours) and you can really see how people get hooked!

So i fancied going yesterday with my mate however my neighbour wasnt in :x

So cut a long story short i paid a visit to American Golf and treated myself to a lovely set of Wilson Staff Di11 irons (5-sw) a cheapy but nice Fazer putter and a Fazer bag :D

Got what i felt was a good deal for the lot, irons were on offer til monday at £149 reduced from £199, got a tenner knocked off the putter and the bag just for asking too :)

Heres to many happy rounds and improving my game vastly, ive mostly been getting 1 or 2 over per hole  so a par is good for me at the moment  everyone starts somewhere!!

Does anyone else on here play?

Awaiting the "it spoils a good walk" comments :P

Yes I play most weeks but no longer a single figure handicapper because I need to play at least twice a week to improve and I don't have the time these days.

I also play come from a long line of family golfers but find cycling more invigorating these days. Also you have to be dedicated to golf to keep to your handicap otherwise when you play comps etc it gives you no room.

Its nice when then weathers nice but when it raind just miserable and it rains in Cumbria a lot lol

Yep I'm trying to play too. The spare room is like a golf shop at the moment ... Girlfriend plays off 5 (somehow as she's tiny) and works for Taylormade. I have NO excuse for being as bad as I am

Usuall 2 rounds per week - and in Santa Barbara, you can play year round.
You just need to remember, this is what you are doing for fun....

So theres a few of you then

I played last friday on another local course, very small 9 hole, most holes between 100 and 150 yards, got a couple of pars but mostly 2 over

Putting is improving tho after practising in my lounge with my homemdade putting green (read cardboard shute with cushions behind to protect skirting board  )

I am also a keen golfer. However, have been extremely lazy this season. Handicap on the last club list was 11. If I wasn't so lazy I'd be single figures. Struggling to find the motivation for some reason! Irish weather doesn't help

Been again today and played a bit better :)

Got par on 2 holes today and was only 1 over on 5 others, i was well pleased with that :D and i was literally centimeters from a 1 under on a hole with a beaut of a shot using a pitch wedge from just off the green, so gutted it didnt go in!!

My putting has a little to be desired tho! My homemade putting green has helped a little but i need more practice

Family are all keen players - i like it but don't find the time to improve , but an avid Golf Fan

Off to The Scottish Open and The Open at Muirfield for the final two days ....

My Picks Els, Rose and Pouter ....

What are peoples thoughts on golf lessons? Have any of you had a lesson or 2, and did it help?

A few people have said the best thing i could do now is have a lesson, mainly to avoid getting into any bad habits that may affect my game as i progress.

I think they are a must - the earlier the better so you don't practice flaws

^^^This.

You may need to try one or two professionals though until you find one you are comfortable with. Some pro's will try and change every aspect of your swing at the same time (takeaway, backswing, downswing, grip etc) which is a pain in the ass but others do it incrementally so they don't destroy your game whilst you are learning the fundamentals.

The only hole I am any good at is the windmill! This is impressive as a non golf fan - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ft2fLuz9mF0

Sorry to be a bit late to this, but I agree with the other 2 responses. Lessons from a pro are a must. They make a huge difference to your game in the long run. They will help weed out common flaws in technique that can be so difficult to correct years down the line. Something that is all too evident when you go to a driving range, the "experienced" golfer who has adapted his game in order to try and lessen the effect of the horrible slice he strikes as a result of his poor technique. Many, many more examples.

I have had numerous lessons and my game is still littered with flaws, big and small.

Get some lessons and keep getting the odd one along the way. They will only make you better, even if they are frustrating at the time!

One of my team plays off 5 and is pushing me to learn. We went to the local driving range the other week, it's quite addictive :)
