I've had fish tanks for years. But I have never used live plants in the tank before. Over the years I've been using more and more bacterial aids to keep the chemicals (Nitrates, Nitrites, Ammonia, etc) in the tank stablizied. Anyhow, in larger tanks chemical changes are often take a long time and are easy to correct due to that time. Well, now I have a little 6 gallon tank in my office that I'd like to make "chemical" free. I've stabilizied the tank the best I could (A little low on pH). It has proper filtration with and outside filter system and has been in my office for 9 months now. I'm thinking of introducing live plants to the tank to further stabilize the tank. I haven't tried it on a larger tank (100g) yet since it would be very costly and time consuming to properly stock the tank with live plants.

So I'd like to try it out on my smaller office tank first. I think I have most of it thought out. But, I just have one question. Once the plants have a proper heavily rooted system in the gravel it should take care of the ammonia concentations under the gravel right?

you don't want me to answer this....i've killed every pet i had. Its a wonder my daughter's made it to her ripe old age of trotting off to college. Its a joke with my friends that I kill pets.

I don't know myself but some friends of mine have kept big fish in a big tank with plants in it so I'll ask them. I hav'nt seen them for a while so that'll be nice thing to do.

Here's the completion of my office tank. It's been set like this for the past few weeks. So I guess I set it up correctly. I change out about 25% of the water every couple weeks or so.

Yeah the live plants seem to help out the tank in many different ways. Not to mention the live plants look so much better than the fake ones. The hardest part so far was setting up the right components (fish, plants, fertilizer, snails, etc.). It's kinda distracting with it sitting on my desk. There's so much movement going on in there.

I should but I like looking at it. :D We might be moving offices in a couple months. If that happens I'm taking this little tank home and getting a bigger one for the office.
