Any electricians here?

The double socket in my garage has been gradually tripping itself out and I've had to reset via the blue button to get power again. Now it won't reset to power at all and the blue button won't go in at all.

Any ideas? Obviously I'm not an expert!

Looks like it's time to replace the RCD socket

As long as you can cut power to the socket (or the whole garage) shouldn't take more than 5 mins

Do you mean the actual socket unit itself Perry? Power to this comes from a fuse box above which can be switched off and powers the garage.

I'm assuming that it still trips even with both 13a plugs removed?, if not unplug them both & try again, if ok with nothing plugged in then plug your 13a sockets on one-at-a-time to try & localise which one is causing your unit to trip.

If the unit still trips with everything unplugged it's time for a new one, these things do go weak, especially if they've tripped quite a few times, your pretty safe to do this as long as you can be 100% sure you've isolated the supply to it.

Yes, I have had one go wrong on me as well. Had to throw it and replace.

If it takes perry 5 minutes, it should take you 2 minutes as you don't have to go through 50 tool boxes to find the exact correct screwdriver :D

Sounds like the RCD has become too sensitive, which it can do after continuously tripping.

If it wont reset without anything plugged in, its definitely the socket. If it only trips with something plugged in, thens its likely to be the appliance.

Try that, then isolate the supply and replace the socket if necessary.

Thanks all. It trips even without plugs present so it must be the socket unit itself as you say. I'll sort another one and change. Assume if I switch off at the single fusebox in my garage I'll be safe?

This indicates that the RCD socket mechanism is buggered - I wouldn't take any chances, just replace it.

Once you've isolated the power
- remove the couple of screws holding the front on
- pull the front off
- unscrew/release the live/neutral/earth wires
- throw old RCD front away
- insert live/neutral/earth wires into correct 'holes' on replacement RCD front and tighten screws
- push front into place
- screw front into place

As I said, 5 minutes (once you have the replacement)

I've got a similar problem with the one on the main board .
It occasionally trips the 30 amp ring mains.
It's going to be a sod to find out which appliance is doing that as is so infrequent!

Paul, you should know me better than that.... All screwdrivers are collated and stored by type, size and application

Yes, but you have to check it out and make a not on the computer that you have done so - replace the one that you just took with a dummy shaped one to keep it looking organised, remove the protective caps, put on your cloves, replace the socket and reverse the operation
