Just had my first MOT since owning the car, all is great apart from one very strange thing. The car have the front centre bonnet catch missing both upper and lower bits? Anybody breaking on that has these two marts including the bolts that I could buy? If not anybody know where else I can get these parts? All very Random.

What car? My coupe doesn't have a central catch. There are two catches either side of the bonnet.

Same here. My E86 coupe has the catches on the sides, rather than centrally. Whats really odd though is that it appears that at some point something must have been bolted to the central point on the bonnet, as their are markings there ! Maybe my car has had a bonnet off another vehicle on it.

However, i compared this with some E85 owners at a meet some months ago, and they had central bonnet catches. So not sure if there has always been a difference between the E85 and E86 in terms of bonnet catch. Or could this be simply down to Post facelift vehicles differing to pre face lift ?

Therefore question is, what car have you got ? And have you got the side catches ?

its a 2008 3.0si roadster. It looks like something should be there. Yes I do have the side latches. But the MOT man said there should be a secondary release. Looking online there does seem to be parts listed as 7047170 and 7172093. Random that they are missing, and also strange that you have some missing too?

If you have the side latches you don't need the middle one. They're not missing, it was designed that way. Unfortunately your MOT man doesn't understand this. It's not a fail or advisory.

Thanks for this, I would agree, but I think its a safety thing. There is no secondary release, i.e. you could hit the level by your leg and the bonnet flys open, I think you are supposed to have a secondary release. Unless the side latches don't work with engine running, just going to check now.

going to start another post to get the debate going a bit, to see what others opinions are and if somebody who can 100% confirm its not required.

Do you mean the leaver? You should have two side catches and a leaver at the front. When my bonnet handle is pulled within the car the two side latches release but the leaver at the front won't let go until you run your fingers underneath the raised part of the bonnet and push it up (I think it's up, can't remember exactly).

The underside of your bonnet should look like this...hoodz4.jpg

If the leaver part has been removed then yes you need to get one. These can become seized if not looked after so maybe previous owner had it removed.

Ditto mine looks like and above (z4 coupe) and only
Last week had to get the wd40 out as it the middle catch was siezed up, took me 20 minutes to wiggle the bonnet open

You have to have a secondary safety catch. MOT guy is correct. Without it the bonnet could fly open if the catch released.

They did move the primary catch from a single central catch to 2 side catches at facelift, but retained the central 'hook' safety catch.

thanks roundoze, really useful pic, I think I have found one on ebay, can you show me what the bottom should look like as that bit is missing too!

I see the latch present, thanks. It looks like 15 and 17 in the attached. Any idea where I can buy these from?

Had a quick look on eBay and didn't see any. Search BMW z4 breaking on eBay and ask the seller if this part is still available.
