Any benefit to run flat tires regarding protecting wheels when deflated?

Hi. Newbie here. Just bought a 2006 30si roadster E85 6-speed with 56,000 miles on it. Has some paint scratches but otherwise seems to be bug free.

The tires are 15 years old so I’m having new non-run flat tires installed. It has the 18” wheels, the 108 style ? I’m new to all the codes and buzzwords. I searched on pros and cons of rf vs. not rf, here and a general search engine search. Some claim the rf’s can cause wheel cracking on a hard hit, but the examples were BMW 19” wheels which one post claims are weaker. Otherwise rf’s are supposed to ride better, maybe get better mpg, and I suppose they are lighter with some advantage there.

My question is, if one gets a flat, is the wheel better protected with a rf vs. a non-rf, or does it make any difference?

Sorry, second question - Advice on tire repair kit and pump to carry? I’m in the USA.

Thanks in advance!

Runflats will always protect your rims for much much longer than a non run flat as that’s what a runflat is designed to do..

Folks carry..space savers, full size wheel, gunk blown in under pressure, rubber links pushed and glue in, some just carry breakdowns cards

FWIW off the 6 tyres I’ve seen punctured over my Zed career and last few years of other cars ..none of them could have been repaired with gunk, foam, plugs ..they all needed a new tyre..

Run flats have a very stiff sidewall which allows you to drive the car with a flat tyre at max 50mph for a maximum of 50 miles, so to a tyre place or your home. The stiffer sidewall will give you a harsher ride and some say encourages wheel cracking (on all wheel sizes, not just 19").

Must be a Scottish thing. I’ve had three punctures since I’ve had Zeds and they’ve all been repairable with rat-tail plugs.

It seems to be kind of an uncertain choice. I in fact changed my mind and have asked for run flats. Most of the roads I use are pretty smooth. I live near Seattle and it has bad roads but I’m unlikely to take the Z4 there for security reasons. I asked a respected tire dealer what they recommend for repair kits and inflators and the like, and they couldn’t endorse anything. They said stuff like Slime doesn’t generally work and can ruin a TPMS sending unit. Finally, I was finding that a competent inflator would be kind of large and expensive. So I thought I would get the run flats for more wheel protection, safety and convenience, and take my chances with the ride quality. Thanks for the help!

Your car doesn't TPMS valves so don't worry about that. Its got Flat Tyre Monitoring which uses the ABS sensors.
