Any android geeks?

If so you might appreciate this - I was the first to Root the Sony Ericsson X10i after the 2.1 update on Sunday night..

In the XDA world of deleted posts, ignored threads and general millions of posts of sh*te, I have the top sticky with 30,000 views and counting (rapidly)

Feel better now

GEEK! :D

No idea what any of that means, but it sounds impressive.

Perhaps you can advise: I've got a Galaxy S running (I believe) Android 1.6. It's annoying not being able to watch Flash-based stuff and I've heard that 2.2 WILL allow this. I see that Samsung are going to offer Galaxy S's with 2.2 from November, but is it possible to upgrade an older Glaxay S like mine?

Yep.. and 2.1 is already out there..

I believe you can put 2.2 on already but there's some sort of lag problem.

I'd put 2.1 on there and be happy - Ive waited all summer for mine and love it. Give flash a few more months for them to make it stable.

Google Galaxy S XDA 2.2 and see what you find :)

Cheers

Something I'll certainly investigate later. Love the handset apart from that!

I thought all posts on this forum were supposed to be in English.

Basically it means that my sooper-dooper phone will be able to call upon the z4-forum for posts to incriminate you, whilst in the pub, quicker than before :poke:

It's the battery life that stops me getting one, had one for a week on trial and found VPN very useful for work using RD to connect to servers.

Also need one with keyboard so would probably go for the Desire Z

Battery life on my HTC Desire worried me at first, but I've switched off all the "background fetching of data" for things like email, weather, twitter etc. and I reckon its now comparable to my old iPhone 3G

My mail is pushed to me realtime - I don't really need it but it's nice to have the option :)

For info, I'm going 2-3 days between charges on my Galaxay S, with (what I'd class) as moderate use. That's with bluetooth and wi-fi off unless I need them. I get through 300min/month, around 150 texts, and use a good amount of data allowance, plus there's incoming calls, so I'd say that's a fair amount of use. I'd say 2-3 days is pretty good for this type of phone, especially with the huge screen.

What's eye-opening is my wife just bought a cheap Samsung "proper" mobile purely for work use: http://www.mobiles.co.uk/orange-samsung-e1170.html. It's lasted 8 days so far on the initial charge on standby, with plenty of juice left. Mental deal that too: 24 month contract but 23 months free (by redemption - which they hope folk will forget about), 300mins, unlimited texts, 500mb data...

I got around the battery problem by buying 3 original batteries for about £9 each.

I got a wall charger too, which means I never now plug the handset in either, which is a nice thing, just swap em around at the wall.

Cudnt do without my X10 now - awesome piece of kit.

I guess no one here knows what rooting is then ? :D

Ive heard the term before...

I would guess it is removing the branded software that the phone manufacturer installs and leaving you with less shite to deal with?

nope.. thats debranding

rooting is like getting an administrator account - by default you dont have access to do anything serious, rooting effectively gets you admin rights so you can do things otherwise restricted.

one such example - an app called Barnacle - takes your 3g connection, enables your wireless and effectively creates a new wireless hotspot.

so say you're in a hotel with 3g signal but no internet, you start barnacle, and hey presto you have a wifi broadband hotspot to use.

all free of course..

nooo... barnacle is just an application that requires root access.

a rootkit is usually software which tries to gain that root access, similar to the one i posted on the OP. Rootkits usually are viruses though, typically malicious.

The one I found is an exploit which temporarily exposes admin access, allowing you to steal it permanently.

it's a bit like jailbreaking an iphone, except that apples are gay.
