Any advice on the quietest gas boilers. . . .

My gas boiler is making a heck of a racket and needs replacing. !970's build house, radiators 5 up and 5 down.

Thing is it's sited in the airing cupboard next to our bedroom so are there any notably quieter brands or types?

We have a friendly gas man that will come and fit it for us but we don't have a clue what to go for and how much it might cost. . . :?

Any gas engineers or members had their boiler replaced?
 
Our Vailant Eco Tech 832 is pretty quiet, new 2 years ago and never been a bit of bother. Mind you my lad fitted it, he works for BG so is pretty clued up on what's reliable as he goes to out fix 'em when they break. Bought ours on his recommendation and never regretted it, good bit of kit.

P.S, ours is in the airing cupboard next to our bedroon as well. We can't hear it at all - well I can't anyway 'cos I'm deaf but the missus reckons it's very quiet :)
 
This is what I fitted 4 years ago in my kitchen http://www.viessmann.co.uk/en/flats_apartments/Product/Gas_condensing_boilers/vitodens_100-w_compact.html My hearing is great and I can't hear it when it's running. Low operating noise of 39Dba.

We have an open plan design from kitchen to TV lounge and it is very quiet. Good luck Paul.
 
Another vote for Valliant Eco Tec here. My mate fitted it and it's been great. The occasional hum on start up, but the fridge is often louder!
 
I fit lots of boiler brands as per customer preference. I fitted a Baxi Eco blue last month. It's their newest model out. Myself and the lad I work with we're both amazed at now quiet it was. Really was whisper quiet :thumbsup:
 
+1 for vailllant Eco tec. Had a new one fitted at our old house now! My recommendation is to have the water flushed every 2 years (every year if you can!) this gets rid of the gunk and if you live slim a hard water area. A good fitter will also use flush cleaner then inhibitor when filling up the pipes (system) with water again. Had to change the water pump in the ecotec after five years. It was fine but noisey, I blame the hard water and lime scale.

Also a vote for potterton. Newer model sorry not sure which one but its quietish . we have one in our current house.
 
I also had a Vailliant EcoTec plus fitted last March in an airing cupboard adjacent to the bedrooms and it is virtually silent. I can't say I've EVER noticed it whilst I've been upstairs really.

+1 on the Vaillant EcoTec plus, very quiet. Worcester Bosch very good also.

Don't suppose you know if you've got any air in the system do you Adamski? They can sound like they want to climb off the wall if there's air in the pump although this is intermittent as it pushes round the heating system then goes back into the pump, it can be be a pita if you have as it's hard trying to catch it in a radiator and the bleed valve in the boiler itself is not the best, there is a valve that you can turn very slightly by the pump to bleed it for a couple of hours if you're confident, there should also be a self bleed guide in the back of the boiler manual, it gives you a step by step guide, be worth a go, best of luck.
 
You may wish to consider sound proofing your airing cupboard to eliminate any noise from the boiler, obviously depends cupboard walls and door construction, access etc, its usually the fan that creates most noise and gets worse with age. The 'Which' forum gives good reviews for quietness to Vailliant boilers.

Thanks everyone - you've certainly given us plenty of info and I feel better placed to go ahead and get this sorted now.

When we originally had the boiler moved from down stairs to upstairs, I did buy some soundproofing partition board and wrap the wall to our bedroom but I think it's age that has caused the noise in the boiler and it now wakes me in the morning, when it starts to run - think it may be the fan - had the guy out and we have tried lubricating the parts - no joy.

Time for a replacement - thanks everyone - I'm going to give our guy a ring and see what he thinks to some of these suggestions.
