any advice on the 1 series please

Currently running a 62 plate 120D coupe. I love it and have no complaints. Pretty quick, 50.4mpg since I bought it (and I pay no attention to hyper-miling) I got the sport plus pack. Looks good but firm ride. I do wish I had speccd the 123 but am happy with the 120.

Off to look at a 116i Sport tomorrow. BMW dealer trade in. All checks out so far so we shall see...

I borrowed one of these while I was waiting for my 120d to arrive. thought it would be a bit slow but it was brilliant, really peppy!

Thought I'd take alook at some mx5's today simply because there's some great deals out there. Erm.... I can't do it the interior is tat, back to searching for a 1 series or maybe even a 3 series but a diesel is preferred.

i heard they were all basically the same base engine. 118 was a detuned 120 sort of with something to do with the intake being different slightly. the 123 was quite different but it was down to the turbo being a twin turbo.

it was something like that.

are there still good gains to be had tuning the bm oil burners. i remember a guy a while back did something to a 530d and it went like stink the torque figures were though the roof and it wasnt much more than a decent tune.

Got one today, so job done.
116i sport. Has everything my daughter wanted. Climate control. Sports seats 1/2 leather, sport steering wheel, sunroof, decent audio, etc.

£4k from a dealer after being traded to a BMW dealer.

Spent this afternoon detailing the outside. Interior tomorrow :)

After the horror stories on babybmw I could be tempted wth a petrol option. Sounds perfect any pictures what year is it?

It's a '64 plate, so an early example, but given the low mileage and pristine condition, alongside the price it's just right. After all my daughter is a student :)

In midst of detailing it but will get photos up sometime.

We had the old shaped 116i and i hated it with a passion. It was the wifes car so it was only SE spec. The interior was sparse and felt cheap, it was slow, it didn't feel nice to drive in anyway, 3 of the alloys buckled and eventually the timing chain snapped killing the engine and presenting a £2.5k bill at only 40k miles. However, it was all under warranty and fixed by BMW.

It would then seem odd that I have jumped into the new shape 1 series. I am currently driving a 2012 F20 125d which is the new version of the 123d. It's still the N47 engine and as others have said it does still have problems as there have been a few with noise. The issue is getting coverage now because so many people are buying older cars without doing any research and not bothering with a warranty. To own any modern car without a warranty is foolish in my opinion, especially a diesel with potential turbo bills. There is no doubt there is an underlying issue How common it is is another matter. I've had 3 cars with the n47 and not one has had an issue. The engine is also in a massive number of 3 and 5 series so failure reports in comparison to the number of units out there are small.

My 125d is proving by far the best all round car I've ever owned. It is currently averaging 52mpg over 8000 miles. It comes from the factory with 218ps and 450nm torque. I have fitted a spider box with switchable maps with a claimed 280ps and 585nm. Data recording through the OBD has shown this claim is slightly down on average but it is still very much a Q car. The 123d has slightly less power but the ECU encryption has been broken on those cars so they can be reliably mapped to over 260ps. MPG is not as good as the 120d and is generally not as good as you would expect due to gearing being set up to give better acceleration, if this is your major concern then the 120d will be everything you want. Driving around town either the 120d or 123d will be pretty poor to be honest.

If you have the budget and your main driving will be around town with a little motorway then the f20 116i is a better bet. The new engine (the one from the cooper) is about a million light years better than the old one. It also sees massive gains from piggy back boxes.

Brilliant post Mowflow thank you. To be honest I've had endless problems with my zed (which now have been nearly resolved) so am extremely weary of buying another problem car. Which could rule out the diesel engine but get me a higher spec petrol engine, I shall look into the 116i and pray its got enough up and go about it.
