Just a quick one guys as we are all checking levels topping up with antifreeze at the mo. can we all be carful what we do with it. You might already know but if you don't. It poisons to cats trouble is antifreeze to cats. is like crystal meth to hill billy. Got home today one of my ginger cats was not right. Took him to the vet he is now on a drip and might not pull thro because of antifreeze. Just be carful how you dispose of it.

Regarding anti-freeze... Should I be adding this to my car ? I thought the coolant has it in already, or have I just made a noob statement and will be roundly chastised (probably by PVR :roll: ) ?

Now I'm the first to admit I'm not a cat lover, but that is irrelevant in this case, and this is awful.
How does this happen? Do people pour it down the drain or something? I wouldn't know, cos I don't go in the engine bay of my car...might get my hands dirty!

your car's coolant should have anti freeze in if serviced correctly . those who have topped up their system over the summer should have added it with water ( hopefully the correct grade ? ) .
also note that anti freeze is not all the same
different cars have different requirements & specifications so as not to knacker up internal parts .hope that helps mr B ?

Thanks Mr W, I only use BMW coolant and not water to top up, so should be fine... inappropriate thread hijack over.

He did not get poisiond by antifreeze it turnes out. Although it is a big problem this time of year. Unfortunately he passed away at 2 this morning while the vet was opatrating. His intestine ruptured and he went into toxic shock. It's all very strange as he seemed fine yesterday morning when he had is breakfast.

There are two main groups of Glycol's.
Ethylene glycol is a clear liquid used in antifreeze and de-icing solutions. Exposure to large amounts of ethylene glycol can damage the kidneys, nervous system, lungs, and heart.
Propylene glycol increases the amount of acid in the body. However, large amounts of propylene glycol are needed to cause this effect.
Propylene glycol breaks down at the same rate as ethylene glycol, although it does not form harmful crystals when it breaks down. Both are related. It's just that when Ethylene glycol breaks down in the body. It form crystals that damages organs. Those crystals kill the kidneys in those that drink it. That's what kills the pets and children. Kidney failure.
As per the type to add to a Zed. As long as it's rated for aluminum. Your good to go. It's actually hard to find an anti-freeze that is not rated for aluminum engines. All one has to do is buy a 50/50 premix bottle. That's usually good for temps down to -34C
