Without turning this into a Mac vs PC debate gannet is quite correct no OS is immune and some test have even proven that some parts of the MAC OS have even more vulnerability. However, the malicious software is targeted mostly to Windows based system and therefor most Mac users rarely have those problems. The developers at Apple recognize this and the next release of the operating system in July will address some of the known vulnerability.
 
I also use Microsoft Security Essentials, it's free, it's light on resources and gets rave reviews. Before that i used Kaspersky and i was also very happy with it.
 
dont have one myself, without sounding too up myself, i don't need one. Anyone who can get into my system, wouldn't be stopped by an AV. The girlfriend has a copy of Eset NOD32 installed which is up there with the likes of kaspersky (i find McAfee to draining on the system)

No, but their 'home' versions are free, and you can buy a 'commercial' suite for 3 people for £150 or so.

Nothing wrong with MSE as far as I can tell, but then I tend to use a sandboxed virtual machine if I'm doing something likely to be hosting something dodgy.
 
i've been going to sophos for 5 years and nobody ever mentioned they had a home version :headbang:
 
Sophos are actually quite relaxed about their licensing...

Totally agree. The AVGs of this world are excellent (and free) but no two AVs will detect exactly the same problems in my long experience. I actually keep two these days; I run Microsoft Security Essentials as standard and keep AVG as a backup scanner. Not a good idea to let both run concurrently so just disable one in Startup if you use two.

And while we are on the free stuff, VLC MediaPlayer from VideoLan plays just about any video you can shake a stick at, while CCleaner is the dogs bollox on the clean-up front. Used them for years with no problems and excellent results. Avail yourself! :thumbsup:
