(another) wind deflector question

I am wondering if anyone has ever tried fitting the original wind deflector using some sort of automotive adhesive tape (3M etc) on the brackets rather than drilling holes or purchasing new hoops? I know there's an aftermarket glass deflector that is fitted using 3M tape so wondered if it was a feasible option?

I assume the bracket on yours has snapped, I wouldn't feel comfortable using 3m tape but the aftermarket deflectors I've seen use Velcro tape which might be a bit more heavy duty.

However as the original deflectors have a mesh netting I don't think this would work as an option. Maybe even a few small clip ties in a clear colour would be better?

I have the Roadster Solutions perspex deflector where the brackets are held on with 3M. I've had no problems whatsoever

Personally, I wouldn't want to test doing 100mph, having some tape work loose, and the wind deflector flying out the back of the motor. I drilled mine. Took 5 minutes and is perfect.

Thanks for you replies.

The reason I'm asking is that I am due to collect my new car in about 3 weeks and I haven't ordered a wind deflector (Something I am now regretting) Thought the 3M tape might be an easier option but if drilling holes only takes 5 minutes then perhaps I'll give that a go.

Out of interest where did you purchase this one from? Looks like something I might be interested in, have seen the official website but it's not very clear how much it would cost including shipping etc if purchasing directly from them.

Bought mine from Roadster Solutions in USA for around $245. You will need to e-mail them for postage rate to the UK, sorry I can't remember what it was now. You will also need to factor import duty costs which I think was around 30 quid. End of the day it was still much cheaper than OEM. I just wanted the clear type than the mesh.

The self adhesive brackets once fitted are very strong and wont come off which is helped that the deflector is a tight fit which pushes the brackets hard against roll hoops. I did a little googling before buying and many owners who have this deflector fitted have had no problems at high speeds.

You will still be able to order the OEM and get the dealer to fit it at the PDI, thats what I did with the mudflaps on mine, ordered them off e-bay and cheekily asked the dealer to fit them at the PDI which they did without charge. If you do order the OEM deflector you will need the replacement rear hoop covers which have the predrilled holes, otherwise you will need to drill them yourself and it will need to be spot on. Unsure I would want try on a new motor :)

Seem Boxsters with this. Looks like a good solution. BTW, Tim - your 'mesh' reference took me back to my old Z3 days and the sipped and rolled up deflector. Happy days :D

Cheers, yep I have the OEM zippy mesh on the Z3, it does have the advantage as you know you can unzip it and it flops out the way unlike the clear perspex type :)

Sorry I'm talking e85/6 too, not e89. Ignore me.

Although there does seem to be a lot of cheap deflectors on ebay for the e89, even actual BMW ones are cheaper than for the e85

Titan Tim,
looks like you have fitted a garmin Sat Nav holder in or around the air vent?
Or do my eyes deceive me?

I am planning on fitting one in the cubby hole but wondered how succesful your option is?

Hi, yes its for the Garmin Nuvi, picked it up from Halfords but it must be 2 years ago now. Does the job perfectly however you can't alter the air vent flap which is not the end of the world, I don't have any better pics in the Zed but I had it fitted in the previous 1 Series,

Thanks for th ereply and pics. I have a look in Halfords to see if they still stock them
Cheers
