Another Wheel Question

So after looking for genunie BMW alloys and finding not much at a decent price I've decided to look into the world of replicas. BMautosport appear to have quite a few choices.

Would there be any pro's or con's between the choices below?

19" csl reps all 19x8 et 37 running 235/35/19's

18" LM rep, staggered 18x8.5inc et38 front and 18x9.5 et45 deeper dish rear's running 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 rear.

19" LM rep, staggered 19x8.5inc et38 front and 19x9.5 et45 deeper dish rear's running 235/35/19 and 265/30/19 rear.

:)

All those wheels are heavy as concrete and you'll slow down your Z4 noticibly and make the car less nimble and handle worse. With the 19" wheels you'll need to lower your stock suspensions or it'll look like a 4x4.

Oh I hadn't even thought of the extra weight side of things. So should 19's be avoided without suspension works then. I'm running stock suspension at the moment and definately dont want the 4x4 look!

Give Mark at BMAutoSport a ring, I have been to his premises when looking for wheels as they are just down the road from where I live. He might be able to give you weights of the wheels you are looking at.

Which Z4 "flavor" do you have?

The 3.0Si and M come with staggered wheel setups. Both front and rear on stagger with the same profile will give you different effective diameters. My Si is 225/40/18 and 255/35/18. Those two tires are the same overall diameter.

I dont quite understand where you are coming from with that statement, surely the rolling diameter will need to be roughly the same as standard when using 19" rims so i wont have any effect at all on making it look like a 4x4, iirc you should aim to be within 2% of the original diameter.
The difference to the apperance of the car will be more wheel and less tire.

The ratio of wheel gap to tire profile height is what gives you the illusion of a 4x4 or non-4x4 look on unchanged suspension / rolling diameter. Once you have more wheel gap compared to tire profile height, that is what makes the car look 4x4ish. Of course, the degree of "4x4ishness" is also in the eye of the beholder, but the ratio I mentioned above should be no more than 1:1 at MINIMUM to stay looking neat.

Another option you might try is used BMW OEM's at a local wheel stores. They often resell trade ins from other bimmers that have replaced theirs. I was able to find a set of used OEM wheels 17x8 for winter driving at 60 bucks each.

I've just had a reply from Mark at BM, the 18" LM or CSL reps weigh in at 11kg, a genuine BMW of same size typically comes in at 11.5 -12kg. :poke:

Yeah I've been keeping my eyes open for used BMW wheels, I like the look of the MV3 alloys but even the used ones are going for in excess of £800 on Ebay at the moment.

well said ...

and yah, don't want anchors on your car

stock bmw rims are actually relatively light given their size ... meaning their 18" rims are usually a medium weight for an 18" rim ... going up to 19", you obviously have to expect more weight ... tires are heavy too, so you'll have to take that into consideration ... so a 16" rim is lighter than 19", but the tires needed on the 16" rim may be heavier since the sidewalls have more rubber

IIRC all 18" OEM wheels on the Z4 are staggered, but the rear offset on the ///M is different to Non ///M's

11 kilos for a replica?!

So the man says. I've seen some replica wheels advertised in the 9kg to 10kg bracket.

I really like the CSL wheels, even good reps at 18", but I'd always assumed they would be heavier than OEM.

Apparently the OEM M wheels with tyres are 22.5 kg fronts and 24.9 kg rear (as discussed in this thread http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=8580&p=136891#p136891 ) obviously that depends on the tyres used but if you do go ahead with reps please can you weigh them out?

Thanks!
