Another Tyre Question

Hello all!

Yes, another tyre question... So thanks for the help in advance.

I have a BMW Z4 E89 23i with 17” wheels. I had all 4 tyres changed last year (GoodYear Eagle F1 ASymmetrics). I have just hit 10k miles and my car went in for its recall with BMW. They informed me that my rear tyres are on 2mm tread on the rear and need changing very soon (fronts are fine at 7mm).

This shocked me and I am very unhappy with the wear rate! After much research I’ve decided to go with Michelin Pilot Sport 4s this time round for the rear. This is where I need help... All websites suggest that I need 225/45 R17 on front and 255/40 R17 on rear. Now this rear tyre size is very expensive for Michelin PS4 (70 quid extra per tyre compared to other sizes). I was curious as to whether I could get the 225 / 45 on the rear as well because I saw this label on the drivers side of my car in the door panel area.

What are your thoughts or shal I stick with what the websites recommend?

What wheels have you got ?
If "square " as in 4 the same width then yes you can go 4 x 225 45 , 235 45 , or 225 50 or various other combinations

Id also be tempted to check your own tread depths & not trust those dealer sharks

The fronts lasted forever on my old 3.0 on Michelin’s, lasted my whole ownership & were about on 5mm after 35k... though went through 2 sets of 255 rears which made it to about 14k on spirited driving max...

10k to 2mm for the rears? Who's a naughty boy, then?

Either that or there's something wrong with the back end, which changing the tyres ain't gonna cure.

How can I find out if they are “square”?

what is your current rear tyre size? and what style wheel have you got?

I Think by square he means all 4 of the same width as opposed to a staggered set where the rear wheels are wider, like 8.5 inch on the front and 9 inch on the back
Hope this helps

How do I find out though?

[ref]rgc610[/ref], you can find out your current tyre size by looking at the side (walls) of your tyres. Have a look and you'll see it's printed on there.

With regard to your question, I've only ever run a staggered set up (i.e. wider (255) at the back and narrower (225) at the front) on a rear wheel drive car. If you're concerned about the cost, you could consider swapping all your tyres over to non-runflat, assuming you haven't done that already. That saves a considerable amount per tyre.

What Buster' says, also is the wear an even 2mm across the tyre (unlikely) or edged? this will give you a clue as to whats going on

Those are staggered 17inch ( style 292 for future reference ) & i would stick to staggered tyres so wider rears .
No reason why you can't drop to 245 40 rear from 255 though , your rears are 8.5j so 245 is ideal 255 considered a max for that width .
Guessing you aren't thrashing or tracking the car so if rubber costs are a concern why not consider other brands ?
Set of Uniroyal RS3 around £300 ,https://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/uniroyal/rainsport-3/225-45-r17-91w-782254
Kumhos a little less around £265 set of 4 https://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/kumho/ecsta-ps71/225-45-zr17-91y-582629
i doubt you would be disappointed with either of the above , PS4 by comparison look to be around £440

Exactly the answer I was after! Thank you!

Those links are for 225 45 so I’ll have a look around for them in 245 40. Changing to that profile compared to 255 40 and making rear tyres “taller” won’t affect my speedometer / drive etc to much?

Owe you one Mr Wilks!

8j front 225 45 + 8.5j rear 245 40 will make no significant difference from your current set up

I have the Pilot Sport 4 tyre, they are incredible.
Top of all reviews every time, very quiet soft but also hard wearing.
A good judge of tyre composition is the old multi storey in summer, if your tyres are squealing as you go round the corners you have a hard compound and the tyre is squeaking as it loses traction. With PS4's you will not hear a thing, they are like poop on a blanket and top rated for wet weather. 10K on mine and 60% worn (rears).

That’s good to hear .. just ordered a set of Pilot Sport 4 S’s to replace the runflats that are hard has hell on my 19s .. Best price was Costco surprisingly,

Ditto, though found National tyres beat them for 2 rears including their puncture / replacement insurance option @ £358
