Another 'too good to be true?' thread?

LOL.

A few months ago I was looking at MR2's (I know, I know  ) I saw a great example on Gumtree at a very good price. This is the reply from the 'owner' when I asked him quite a few questions: -

"Hi, my car is still available but the only issue is that I moved to Northern Ireland because I found a better job here. I am open to offers and the only reason I put it for sale is because I work in constructions and got a company truck I drive often. If you like the car and if you want to buy it, I can take 2-3 days off from work in order to bring it to your address and close the deal. It has no accidents or mechanical problems and it's a non smoker car. If you want to buy it and need more info about my car, just mention it. Forgot to mention, it has only 32,715 miles.

Cheers,

Adam"

Btw, his name (well, at least one of them) is Adam Nowak

The alarm bells were ringing anyway but this response is brilliant! Thank you very much for your input guys!

What a dirty robbing C***ing m***ther F***er....

I reckon he's planning on meeting up with the buyer at a UK port - knowing they've got the dollars on them, then doing them over for the money.

Arseholes!

I'm considering a nice email response to him... hmm best get my abusive thinking cap on...

My better half its a police officer, she says they get more reports of scams from Gumtree than any other site, by a long way. She won't touch it

looks like this is another scam, £8.5k for a 2007 Z4MC with 35k miles ??

http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/bmw-z4-m-coupe-blackred-nappa-z4m-2007/104316149

I don't know if it is relevant but HPI checks will not guarantee insurance against fraud if you do not attend the sellers address on the registration document. This chap seems to want to meet somewhere neutral.

Praps we should get together, meet him somewhere off the beaten track, and kill him.

The above is a Joke- I am not, repeat not, suggesting we conspire to murder, that would be wrong!!

I just thought it would be an amusing thing to suggest.

I have just sent him the following message:

Hi I've had a good think about it, I'd like to purchase the car - can you deliver it to the following address:

Lloyd House
Samson Rd
Birmingham
B11 1JJ

Cheers

By the way, that address is the West Midlands Police Headquarters for those who don't know...

If he's got anyting about him he'll google the address and get the message... :D

Hehe - this add is no longer available.... BUSTED!

He's just replied to me:

"That's good news!
I need to speak to my boss about it, and will try to take few days off in order to bring the car to your address and make the deal because the car is also here with me. I have everything for this car including service book with all records and inspections done only at authorised dealer.
I'll give you an answer by tonight"

Dirty lying scumbag.... Obviously not as clever as he thinks he is, he hasn't clocked where the address is - retard...

Nice work people, so is the car pure fiction? is it stolen and ghosted on to forged doc's? unrecorded accident damage? HP/loan purchase? Interesting.

Anyway it looks like everybody wants out of their Coupes this time a 2006 ///M coupe for £7850 some might say it's tempting but nah, not even at that price :poke:

Joke :friends: But it's surely another scam? about time up-a-gumtree sorted themselves out!

From the checks I've carried out I'd say the car itself is pukka, I think the biggest factor is that this Adam Polishguywassaname isn't and never has been the owner...

No reply as yet from him, I think he may have got the message...

they usually use pics of genuine cars that were for sale recently. so hpi checks and the like come up fine. they sometimes even copy the adverts too..... luckily they can be spotted a mile off and are about 2k cheaper than the rest

I still don't understand what he is going to try and get from it? Surely no one would send him cash without seeing the car first..? :headbang:

Seems like a stupid scam to me - but I guess maybe some people are gullible enough to fall for it.

My guess is that he would ask for a deposit - after all, he is taking the risk by taking time off work and driving over from NI, so it's not unreasonable to ask for a token deposit (say £500 or £1,000) to show that the buyer is serious. Naturally, as soon as any deposit is paid, the seller would disappear without trace.

Gumtree is pretty poor at removing fraudulent ads. One of my other passions is watches. Almost nightly, I report fake watches to Gumtree (I have a standard piece of text that I just paste in to their form). Even when it's patently obvious that a watch is fake (even the people at Gumtree must know that you can't buy a genuine Rolex for £40), the listings only get removed about 50% of the time.

For a long (over 1,300 posts!) thread about scammers who initially targeted AVForums and then moved on to Gumtree, offering non-existent iPods, Apple Macs, etc, and how they have kept on scamming despite having been brought to trial, have a look at http://www.avforums.com/forums/foru...insworth-stowe-street-lichfield-scammers.html

I just received a very odd reply from him... It seems he's trying to make it sound as legitimate as possible...

"Hi Tom,
I received a notification from gumtree in which they recommend using brokerage companies for distant transactions. The brokerage company they were talking about is Royal Car Traders and this is their website: www.royalcartraders.co.uk. I've spoken to my boss about this and he agrees that this is the best and safest way because I don't want to take these days off and ... maybe come for nothing, I mean that there is a risk because if you don't show up my boss will not allow me to take another day off because I'm new here so, I must be covered somehow plus there will be some expenses with the road trip as well.
I have read their terms and I do think this is the best way for both of us since there is a long way and we both need to be sure we'll get what we want. You can read how an auto broker works here: www.royalcartraders.co.uk/howitworks.php . As soon as I arrive you can verify it at any inspection service you want and only if you decide to keep it, they will release the money to me so, I believe this is the safest way. With an intermediary company involved between us I can be sure that you will be coming at the meeting because it's a very long distance and I want to be 100% sure nothing unexpected comes up and I dont' want to drive all the way for nothing. Let me know your decision because there is another person who wants to buy it and I need to know which way to go as for their commission, I'm willing to cover it. Forgot to mention that I have all documents including owner's manual, V5 and also two keys"

Stillll hasn't got the message about the address I gave him

Which is, as I am sure you have realised, a web site set up by the scammer - any money paid to them will disappear without trace. All the classic signs are there - professional looking web site (including fake biographies of the people who "work" there) but no physical address, and a Google search for "Royal Car Traders" only finds this thread on Z4-forum.

Indeed...

I'm considering shopping this guy good and proper, purely to save any unsuspecting fool their money...
