another strange electrical fault

Went out for a drive to the meet at Shepshed water mill today to put faces to some of the names on here and to look at some other Zeds as I don't see any round here ( 2 in 2 months)

While there I tried to start the car found that it wouldn't turn over and also there was an unknown warning light on the dash . After a search on the net this light was found to be a SMG fault warning light ( but the car is manual ) .

Everything else on the car works as it should and after exhausting all the idea's from the numerous forum members there I eventually called the man in his orange van . He found that there was no feed to the starter . The car was eventually started by shorting out the starter and I drove the 50 miles home no problem

I have searched the forum and the web but can't find any information as to the whereabouts or existence of a starter relay that was mentioned or why this light should be on with a manual transmission . Even if I had SMG this light being on should not affect the starting

This is the third electrical problem I have had with the car in 2 months , passenger airbag loom and GM5 module being the other 2 but none of the faults seem related

Luckily I've still got 3 weeks warranty left but it looks like I'll be starting the car with a piece of wire until I can get to the garage on Friday . Typical that I work 4 on 4 off and this happens as I'm about to start 4 on

The relay you're looking for is integral to the starter, that's what you're triggering when you short the leads. The wire you're shorting to comes from the immobiliser module, under the left side dash for LHD, not sure if it's moved or not for RHD. On facelift cars, the signal goes from immobiliser to the power module attached to the front of the under bonnet electrics box, before continuing on to the starter.

There must be an open circuit between the immobiliser and the starter. The immobiliser works, or you wouldn't be able to start the car. No idea about SMG, very strange. Hopefully once the starter control is sorted, the SMG light will go away.

Just had another thought, could be the ignition switch itself. Not the lock, the electrical switch behind the lock. Some have had trouble with this thing, easy and inexpensive to replace.

It's getting worse
Don't know if it is related but I now only have 2 tail lights working (1 each side) and they have a 12v feed so are as bright as brake lights
my understanding is that brake and tail light are the same bulb but both tail only get 6v and 1 goes up to 12v when the brake pedal is pressed to give a brighter light

Booked in indy on Friday and will hopefully be something simple but I doubt it

Get them to flash the car modules with standard software, this should sort out any issue, I think you have a problem with the OBD port as we had trouble with connecting to the car on Sunday.

Hi Neil

The roof works off remote now so I don't know what is going on , it didn't work before so it can't have taken the original programming back

Get you garage to code the following the car

PWM_ANSTEUERUNG_SL_RE_HI
ALSZ wert_02
PWM_ANSTEUERUNG_SL_LI_HI
ALSZ wert_02
Switch from wert 01 to 02 will change voltage from 12v to 6v
