ANOTHER SPRING GONE???

Guys - those unlucky enought to have had the rear springs go on the rear, could they please enlighten me as to what actually happens? I was at a set of lights the other day in traffic and went to pull away when..... BANG followed another really loud BANG!!

I obviously crapped myself but since then the car has still felt its usual firm self but since then, it seems to have developed a hissing noise (or some sort of resistance noise) when turning left above 30mph....

Im going to need to take it in but does that sound like one of these rear spring issues or what??

I noticed no difference when my offside rear went - just a sound like a loose spanner rattling about :o

if you dont hear the matallic rattle you could be driving around with it until your 1st mot or service, somtimes you can tell by mesuring the distance between the top of the wheel arch to the top of the tyre.the springs seem to break at the bottom of the coil which sits in the cup.i think that this is a known problem that bmw should be addressing as this is a common problem  :thumbsdown:iv'e posted about this a couple of weeks ago.

Both mine broke recently and I knew nothing of it until MOT time. It was the end 22 of each coil had stress fractured off. No difference in noise, handling ride height or any clunking.

Well - as suspected..... the rear offside spring had completeley snapped. Fortunately its a warranty issue.

However, i'm still umming and rrrring about renewing the warranty. In the last 6 months i've about 3 warranty issues and its due to expire in December. Seems like a no brainer but wondered what others had planned on doing. Seems like the only option is the £850 comprehensive one.

Anyone know per chance how much i would cost to put a broken coil spring right if i were paying?

Cooper Reading were going to charge me about £70 per spring and then the same for labour, IIRC... however I whinged (I seem to do that a lot when I'm there!) and they were good enough to get the parts reaplced on goodwill, I just payed the labour. Although that was after I threatened to take it to my indie.

Pleased to hear other people haven't notice until MOT time... I was thinking I wasn't at one with the car!

Pawnsacrifice is right on price and diy is less than 15 minutes per spring. Wheel off, undo 1 shock bolt push down hub, swap out spring, refit shock bolt and wheel, drink cup of tea and admire result.

I have just had my right rear spring replaced under warranty.

Got the car back and the noise is worse, although different. Sounds like metal grinding but more noticeable under load on the right side.

Any ideas what else it could be?

Car is going back in on Thursday.

Cheers

Jay

My handbrake cable is known to give a screech when the car is jacked up, might be that if everything else is OK

Apparently not in my experience. New gearbox fitted and I drove it away to find that it sounded like a bag of spanners had been left in the engine bay. Feckers!

You would think so wouldnt you. Now I have to take more time out from work to drop the car off 1st thing of a morning and then get the GF to drop me off at the station.
