Another Set of RFTs Ditched

I joined the non-RFT club today with a set of Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric. All I can say is WOW! I was always a bit suspicious of all the claims at how much better non-RFTs are, but it's all true, it really does feel like a completely different car.

Believe it or not, the first thing I noticed on the top down ride home was how much different the car sounds. The Bridgestone RFTs had a very distinctive hum which is completely gone leaving the exhaust note much more pronounced. No question that the car has lost harshness, while gaining responsiveness. The only downside is that you do feel slightly less 'connected' to the road.

I'll need a bit more time to really form an opinion, but initially impressions are

getting rid of the rft"s,is it worth the change,would love to bin them,as there is no
joy in driving here,due to the potholes,whot kind of price would i expect to pay
to replace the rft"s to ( my back is much better now wheels) and would i have
to get a spare wheel.?

I was able to score a set of Eagle F1s from TireRack for a bit over $900 (witha road hazard waranty), add another $200 for mounting and a 4-wheel alignment. I'm not sure what prices might be over on your side of the pond though.

I purchased a Conti Comfort Kit to handle emergencies. This is similar to the OEM mobility kit found in ///Ms without runflats.

ay8306,are the avail from most outlets,that would come in about £750 + comfort kit,
as that would save space in the boot (trunk)i think i am sold on that;if it makes
life in the zed not so sore,will pay anything,will let you now how i get on,

Had a set of 18" F1s fitted last Autumn for £590 here. Very pleased with them too.

sticks,does it make life much easier when driving,mine 17"s,so probly bit
cheaper,cant put a price on your back,whot did you do about a spare,
did you get one of those conti kits like ay8306.

I got the genuine BMW mobility kit for about 65 quid qns it comes in a neat logo d bag with all the bits you need

I bought one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000UPEHJU. I've not tried it yet but it seems to have the functions I'd want, reviews are ok, and it fits in the gap by the battery. I also got a can of Tyre Weld @ 2 for £9.

I changed my 120d to Cont Sportcontact2s which were 17s and were very impressive, with a couple of extra psi. The change on the 120 was more dramatic than the Z4, almost made it worth keeping, but the Z4 feels the complet package with non rfts. I believe the Z4 was designed with non-rfts in mind, unlike later cars.

As I've said before though. If you look to trade in a car to BM with ono-rfts they will 'charge you for replacing them so perhaps keep them if you've space.

I also just dumped the RFT's a couple of weeks ago and am very pleased with the new ride. I feel like I'm rolling over cracks in the road instead of crashing into them. I may just be lucky but in 20 or so years of driving I have never had a "blowout" or even a roadside flat. but I have had a slow leak or 2 caused by a nail or screw, so with that history in mind I went with a SLIME tire repair kit - http://www.slime.com/product/122/Smart-Spair-15-Minute-Emergency-Tire-Repair-(%23SS-PDQ/06.html - Its only meant to get me to a garage for a real fix. And if I do have my first roadside flat, well It will suck waiting for a tow truck, but that’s why I pay for roadside assistance with my Auto Insurance. They’ve taken enough of my money for no reason to tow us all for free. I did enjoy the tire salesman asking me if I realized non RFT's could leave me open to being stranded with a flat tire? Like I hadn’t thought of that. Thanks for the tire lesson professor obvious.
