Another Saris Bones question

Morning all,

Looking to purchase a Saris Bones 3 bike rack shortly for my Coupe.
Was just wondering whether anything extra is needed such as the hatch huggers etc?

Have done a search for this but there's 100's of posts of people saying if they fit but not of any accessories.

Many thanks,
Dan

Not sure what hatch huggers are but I use a bones 3 on my roadie after seeing it used by both coupe and roadie owners without issue.

As a tip, I would strongly suggest to use some soft squishy rubber mat between the bones' feet and ur paintwork. Also, make sure the straps are knotted or tied up so they dont flap and whip about, again as a risk to ur paintwork. Cut up an old bike tyre innertube and wrap the strap anchors with cut sections too.

Solid as a rock when tied down properly.

I don't like the thought of that force on the top edge of the hatch glass, but I still have this https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=106787&hilit=Seasucker for sale, open to offers

Interesting! What is the max weight of these?.. I am looking to use it with my downhill bike which weighs in at about 16kg's although it is quite long too!

"Maximum bike weight is 20kg"

^good review because he has a z4 coupe :)

I have a Saris Bones 3 still unopened and in the box as I bought a rowing machine and use that instead of putting the bike on the back of the car!

From the research on here and looking up other sites it fits the original and best E85 and also fits the E86 afterthought hatchback version of the Z4 and all it needs is some tape or cushioning round the contact points for attaching to the car.

I also have some extra Hatch Huggers for securing the bike. As I've never used the Saris Bones 3 I have no idea if I actually need them or not.

With the hatchback I'd be more worried about any stress on the rear window. With the amount of Saris Bones that are used sitting on car windows it will be fine. I've had other bike racks on other cars with the weight on the rear window and never had any problems.

Thanks for the replies all, seems like there is pros and cons of both the Saris and Seasucker.
The way how I see it is like so
Saris:
1. Cheaper
2. Somewhat cumbersome to fit
3. A lot of weight resting on the rear window
4. Can damage paintwork in places

Seasucker:
1. Expensive
2. Easy and quick to fit
3. Less weight on the rear window - however, it is still some weight that will be on there
4. Cranks can touch paintwork and cause damage if not secured correctly.

So what would you go for? the Saris is currently on sale in Halfords for £120 and if you use the hatch huggers it comes to about £140ish
Or
Go for the Seasucker that philbo909 has for £175 ish - normal price is over £200..

Thoughts?

Well if it helps you decide I'll part with the Seasucker for 140 Inc. Postage
I'd be paying eBay fees to put it on there anyway

Ahh go on then, I'll take it!

Are you able to keep a hold of it until Monday? I get paid then so have a lot more free money from then if that's cool?

I used to have an MC and the Bones worked a treat without anything additional. That said, I only ever carried one bike on it.

I've had a look at the Saris because of the good reviews. Still not sure about the carrier feet resting on the glass though, and every bike rack I've ever used has scratched or scuffed the paintwork at some point.

Picked up a new bike this week, and so came across this thread.

Is the Saris 1 and Seasucker still the best option for the E86 Coupe.

Has anyone any pics of both fitted to their cars.

Ive got a Bones RS 3 ( no longer available new) which I used on my recently sold E46 330ci convertible.
Feet fir on boot area with lugs under bottom of hatch or boot lid and straps to hinge end( either boot hinge for my convertible or top of hatch for coupe. Distance form bottom lugs to psrt that sits on boot lid is adjustable to fit different cars. Looks a better solution to me than Saris 3.

May beup or sale just need to know if any solution (or complete No No ) to carrying a bike on an E89 would think no change on roof but my RS may fit folding boot lid. Worried about weight on folding mechanism etc. Have a fitment chart somewhere not tried to find it as with only essential journeys not likely to be going anywhere on bike

I’ve still got my Saris Bones rack, but not the M Coupe. I do have a normal coupe now though, and wouldn't hesitate to use the Saris on that. Only addition would be a set of hatch huggers to help soften the contact points a little.

IDK about Saris bones RS 3 but I have the Bones 3 and settled on this one after 4 other crappy racks.

I'd def use it on a E86 but only with Sorbothane pads under the mounting points or such.
On an E85 I use squishy rubber mat to protect the paintwork.

Hi mate - just bought a Saris Bones 2 off eBay. What do you mean by hatch huggers? Can you kindly send a photo or a link or something?

These...they effectively replace the plastic-covered hooks on the Saris and are kinder to your paint/shutlines.
