Another roof problem...

Hi all,

After a succession of issues with my Z4 (water pump & EPS failure in one week!) I now have an issue with the roof.

I changed my roof this weekend after some lovely person sliced my roof with a knife in Dorset of all places! Before changing the roof it worked perfectly, now, after the change the roof will go down very slowly and with some loud whirring, but will not move at all when trying to close it. I lost some fluid during the change so have topped it up with hydraulic jack fluid as recommended on the forum, and thought that this was the issue, but it doesn't appear to have worked. To close the roof again I have to manually
release it, strangely the motor will close the roof for the very last bit of the movement when the clips clip in.

Does anybody have any ideas at all what may be the cause? I hope the above rambling makes sense, and I would really appreciate any help.

If you can answer:-
1) Did you keep the original motor, or did one come attached to the roof ?
2) Did you put the motor back in the same position ?
3) Is the Motor vertical or lying on it's side
4) Is the resevoir about 3/4 full when the roof is in the down position ?

Assuming the motor is running properly, it sounds as though you have a weak hydraulic pump, either that or you've possibly got the bypass valve slightly stuck in and the pump isnt reaching full capacity.

If you can answer the above, we may be able to identify it better.
 
Hi mate, thanks a lot for the reply, my answers are below.

1) I Kept the same Motor
2) The Motor went back in the same position, it has already been relocated into the boot by the previous owner.
3) It’s as close to vertical as it can be I think, at a reasonable angle but not quite 45 degrees.
4) The reservoir was below the full up line with the roof closed, so I have pretty much filled it, is the level critical?

Interesting point on the bypass valve, I’ll have a search for whether that’s a likely culprit.
 
Ok 1-4 sound good.

If its in the boot now, try taking the bowden cable assembly off the motor and making sure the brass valve pops in and out freely when pressed. If not get some WD40 around it and work it abit.

If that fails it sounds like you need a new pump.
