Another one of those "shall i get something else" moments

Saskia, I'm looking for the same.

A T350 would be lovely, but the potential problems with that engine just put me off. In fact I was looking to buy a T350 when I bought the Z, opted for the Z because I was too worried about the engine on the TVR going pop.

Perhaps if you buy one thats already been sorted?

The Exige certainly produces a lot of pops, bang, whines and whistles, it's quite fun.

I think we probably all have these from time to time, but for me, the Z is probably the best of many worlds.

I like a car to feel fast, sound good, be able to drift a little on the road, be reliable, be able to do distance if necessary, not be too heavy on fuel, have good throttle response.

So I need something:

Ideally front engined
Rear wheel drive
Convertible (adds to feeling of speed)
More than 4 cylinders
Non-turbocharged
Reliable

Which really limits the field down somewhat.

The likes of 911s and R8s interest me, but I fear that a little drifting on the road would require ridiculous levels of provocation to cajole it into a little slide.

In fact, the only thing that really springs to mind is a convertible Aston, but although it is a gorgeous piece of machinery, I just don't think it would be as exciting to drive as the Z4MR.

The 1M is possibly the most over-rated car BMW have ever made.

I wonder how much of the early praise it received was down to people in the business/media speculating on the price due to it's rarity - half of the cars sold had changed hands 3 times before they hit 10k miles, and some of the pricing was ludicrous.

Don't get me wrong, they are good cars, but don't even half way live up to their reputation.

The 1M was certainly hyped like no other car in the run-up to its launch and hey presto great residuals and happy owners. So much so that Jaguar seem to have taken it to the next level with the F-type.

I posted something on pistonheads last week which was an excerpt of a review of the 1M. It could've been written about the Z4MC, which was panned by the motoring press at launch (no glitzy, long drawn out PR campaign for the Z4M's you see with journo's flown all over Europe to sit in the passenger seat whilst some faceless exec from the car company feeds them a load of bullshit about what a great car it is). My point being that if you spend enough on a car launch and cosset the people reviewing it.....surprise, surprise it's a "great car" and the sales, residuals and everything else follow.

But have you actually driven one?

Yes and I really liked it. But the same flaws people used to beat the Z4MC with - harsh damping, poor traction on uneven road surfaces were exactly the same on the 1M. So why such a different press reception I ask you?
