Long time BMW owner (motorcycles, cars) and my first Z4. Purchased my dad's 2006 3.0i given he's 90 and his Parkinson's is getting more aggressive. Apparently dad isn't as fastidious as he used to be so I spent the weekend replacing the windshield cowl, cup holders, squirrel stuff (car got infested this winter), trunk struts, etc. Now to the shop for tie rod ends (my skill set ends).

Driving it halfway across the country certainly told me a few things about the car....even as it ticked past 100K miles. Oddly, it didn't burn any oil, go figure.

Welcome from a sunny evening in Cornwall. The engines in these cars just go on and on with a little TLC. :driving: :thumbsup:
 
Thanks, he's had it for some time but is doing as good as expected. They are downsizing their number of cars from 3 to 1. It's sad really, work your life to get to a point and then sell it off just to slowly die. My turn is coming soon, just stay healthy and count the days one at a time. Yet I'm near retirement myself and I'll need to find continued work. Heck I may work for BMW selling bits and kicking tires as I work to live rather than live to work.

That's a sad way to acquire your Z4 but at least your Dad will know it's gone to a good home and I wish him all the best. :thumbsup:
 
Welcome to the forum, so glad you have managed to get your dad’s car it will be a great memory of him in years to come

I feel your pain re his health my mum is 87 and has recently gone into a care home as her dementia is getting worse

It’s hard to see the decline of your parents

Here's a quick update: This Z4 had Chinese suspension parts, gone. The car had the 3 standard oil leaks (valve cover, oil filter and pan), mushroomed right front shock tower, numerous plastic issues (oddments Box cracked the worst), and some broken wires in the transmission (sport mode broken). In essence I paid for the car twice because of the repairs. Why? Simply the previous owners (and my father) just passed the issues down given I'm the 6th owner of a Texas car. Body is pristine as is the paint, interior and top. The downside was poor maintenance for high ticket items. So rather than dump it, I dived deep into it and now I have a sorted car.

I'm debating replacing the VANOS sensors as I have no clue if they've been replaced. Wisdom indicates replacing them at 70K. What I do know is try to avoid buying parts from eastern Europe on eBay if you can. Fitted the wind deflector, an easy job but getting some of the parts was hard but then again it's a 14 year old car. It used to groan when put in reverse, and dad said it always did that. It was the shock tower complaining and other than that a decent ride (the run flats were gone along time ago).

It's good to see you getting it back to how it should be. :thumbsup:

Interesting car as it seems to be a facelift car with the N52 engine, but we never got a facelift 3.0i in the UK - they were all 30Si.
