Another door lock problem

Thanks for your replies.
The symptoms are that if i unlock the car i can hear the central locking unlocking the the doors when i use either the key fob buttons or the key in the lock so this led me to think it wasnt GM5 relay.Both the little door buttons pop up but the door wont open with either the inside or outside handles so i started to think bowden cable.Then the problem became intermitent and the door would open fine for a day or two then stop again and i thought if it was the cable would it be intermitent.I was then told about a solenoid which controls the dead locks so started thinking towards this.Im not sure wether this info is good or not so am open to any suggestions.

That sounds identical to the issue I had last week. I took it to a local indie who diagnosed it as the actual door lock mechanism whereby the the solnoid that operates the deadlock inside the lock had failed.
Apparently a common fault with the 3 series but does affect many BMW's (he gets 6-7 a month through his doors.
The good news is the part is not that expensive (£50 plus VAT). The slightly bad news is to do the job properly (if your door is closed) requires seat removal to take the door panel off without damaging.
It cost me £150 all in at an indie.
