Another day, another issue...MAF sensor?

Afternoon all

Being such such a lovely day I thought I'd take the Z out for a spin with the roof down. Was going really well but have just noticed the engine management light has come on.

I only have the Torque Pro app and an OBD sensor and that is telling me I have a Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance problem. Error code is P0101-Powertrain.

Is this likely to be the MAF sensor seeing how I have no other codes? Can't say I've noticed it drive any differently. If it's likely to be the MAF do I attempt to clean it first before replacing it? If so,.is it a relatively straightforward job and what are the risks of driving it until fixed?

Thanks.

You need to check for split intake pipe first.
The engine could be taking in unmetered air which would chuck up a code for MAF sensor.

Can't see any obvious problems with the intake pipe. Just unplugged and plugged back in the sensor and the engine light has gone off. I've tried resetting the fault code but it keeps coming back on, although the engine management light hasn't yet come back on.

Tom, have you definitely checked the pipe properly? It's the small wiggly one that goes into the throttle body. It is prone to splitting in the bottom of the narrow sections and sometimes it is extremely hard to see it.

Afternoon Martin

Is it the one in this photo, coming off the bottom of the Xevo unit? If so I've had a good look and cannot see any splits in it. I've wiggled them all around and the engine management light is off and I no longer have any fault codes coming up....bit of a mystery!

Hi Tom, follow that fat pipe all the way back to where it does a turn and into the throttle body.
You'll see it enters a rubber section with a big main pipe and a smaller one on the top. That is usually the culprit.

Thanks Martin. The rubber section is very dry. I can't see any obvious splits but the smaller wiggly pipe on top does look like it is starting to perish - I can see some very minor cracks which I guess could be the start of the problem perhaps?

Is it a tricky job to replace? If not do you know what the part is called and I might have a go...!

One of these:

Easy to fit but a little easier to access if you take the disa off.
Make sure the lips are all correctly seated or tightening the jubilee clips can open gaps.

Excellent - thanks again Martin. As mine is no doubt the original it won’t hurt for me to get one of these and fit it in the hope this fixes the problem (although the car is currently telling me it doesn’t have any problems!).

Quick update on this.

Took her on a 90 mile round trip this morning and the engine management light did not come on and no faults found on the code reader. All very odd.
